Recently, we’ve seen celebrities make anti-racism PSAs and motivational videos. However, they all seem fake or cringe, to put it lightly. But, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has just shown the power he holds as a world-famous footballer. And other celebrities should take note of it immediately.

Marcus Rashford campaign to keep free school meals going

Initially, Boris Johnson’s government was determined to finish the scheme of free school meals at the end of this summer term. Around 1.3 million children claimed these free meals from schools in 2019. Moreover, this policy has been in place for over a century, but the government was going to end it. It would have been a horrible move, as this scheme had prevented malnourishment among millions of children from working-class families. And the person that the UK has to thank for this policy to still continue is Marcus Rashford – Manchester United forward.

Rashford began his campaign 6 days earlier, with a tweet. After that, the Manchester United player began a campaign on Twitter, saying that he will “keep fighting until no child in the UK has to worry about where their next meal is coming from”. Furthermore, Rashford wrote an open letter to British MPs in Parliament, asking everyone to tag their MPs underneath the tweet. That letter got almost 150,000 retweets:

After that, Rashford became a part of the Twitter trend #MaketheUturn to force the government to take their decision back. He wrote a heartfelt thread, beginning with:

When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown
#maketheuturn

Rashford’s efforts put the #MakeTheUturn at number 1 and 2 trending trends in England, and it worked!

Rashford’s campaign paid off!

Just today, the UK government took the Uturn and will continue to provide free school meals to 1.3 million kids. Moreover, Boris Johnson’s spokesperson mentioned Marcus Rashford’s efforts, saying:

(Rashford’s) contribution to the debate around poverty and respects he’s been using his profile as a leading sportsman to highlight important issues.

As soon as Rashford heard the news, he was ecstatic. He tweeted:

I don’t even know what to say. Just look at what we can do when we come together, THIS is England in 2020.

After that, Rashford wrote another open letter to all MPs of the UK Parliament, saying:

This was never about me or you, this was never about politics, this was a cry out for help from vulnerable parents all over the country and I simply provided a platform for their voices to be heard. I stand proud today knowing that we have listened, and we have done what is right. There is still a long way to go but I am thankful to you all that we have given these families just one less thing to worry about tonight. The wellbeing of our children should ALWAYS be a priority.

And as expected, Marcus Rashford got a lot of praise from everyone across the board. His own club Manchester United and their rivals Manchester City praised him, tweeting:

In short, Marcus Rashford has demonstrated how much power celebrities and sportsmen hold in their hands.

A shining example for other celebrities

Recently, celebrities have gotten a lot of stick for their PSAs. Last week, Sarah Paulson, Aaron Paul, Kristen Stewart, and other high-profile celebrities got a lot of stick for their anti-racism PSA. It seemed fake and more like an audition for a movie, instead of a heartfelt message. Then, a few months ago, Gal Gadot, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Schumer, and other actors were criticized for singing the cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” from the comforts of their huge mansions.

Again, these celebrities should take note of Marcus Rashford and see how they can bring real change. If they can truly unite and dedicate towards a cause, they can force change, and that is what they should be doing!
