Amid conversations on racial discrimination, The Bachelor casts their new candidate. Their first-ever black candidate, Matt James, will appear in the next season of the show.

Since 2002, the dating reality show has been a must-watch for the American viewers.

Created by Mike Fleiss, the show’s presenter is Chris Harrison. The first episode premiered on ABC in 2002. According to the premises of The Bachelor, a single man has to choose his future wife from more than 20 women. During the course of the show, he eliminates one woman each week. At the end of the show, he has to culminate a marriage proposal to the final candidate. Although the premise seems simple, there are many twists, conflicts, and issues among the participants. After overcoming all the issues, it’s still not a guarantee that the guy will end up with the selected candidate.

For the next season, The Bachelor has cast their first-ever black candidate, Matt James.

After George Floyd’s murder, America has started talking about racism and racial discrimination. The internet is abuzz with the talks of what changes need to be made and how. Amid these conversations, The Bachelor announced their first black candidate, Matt James. This decision has been made after a campaign was launched which questioned the show’s lack of diversity. Before him, Rachel Lindsay made history when she was cast as the first-ever black woman on the spin-off, The Bachelorette. Matt James, a 28-year-old real estate broker, talked to Good Morning America, along with Lindsay. He said:

“When Rachel speaks, we listen. She has a very important voice in all of this being the first Black woman, person of color, to have a lead. So, I think that we’re all following suit in that conversation and this is hopefully the first of many Black men to be in this position that I’m in now.”

Furthermore, he said:

“I don’t think it’s ever the wrong time to do the right thing. Too little too late for me is this happening and we can’t have change until we put that first foot forward, and that first forward for The Bachelor franchise is having a black lead. So, I’m excited to take on that role.”

Matt James has expressed his excitement for The Bachelor’s inclusion. The next season will premiere in 2021.
