It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Episode Cut After Featuring Blackface
The online streaming giant Netflix has removed an entire episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia after the episode featured blackface. Episode nine of season six, titled ‘Dee Reynolds: Shaping America’s Youth’ is no longer available on Netflix on any region after the streaming platform cut it out over potential racist remarks. In the episode, Mac and Dee both wear blackface which has become a terrible move in the entertainment business over the past few years. As the country faces its rise in the Black Lives Matter movement along with protests and riots, Netflix found it best to remove the episode.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Is Not The Only One
It turns out that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is not the only series in the Netflix list to receive a removal. Recently, Netflix also removed The League of Gentlman after it also featured the use of blackface. Papa Lazarou is in the discussion here, a scary clownish individual with black makeup.
Next up, David Walliams and Matt Lucas sketch shows, Little Britain and Come Fly With Me, have also been removed. Moreover, BBC iPlayer and BritBox have dropped these shows as well. The reason: Blackface.
A BBC spokesperson commented about the decision to Digital Spy. Here is what they said:
“There’s a lot of historical programming available on BBC iPlayer, which we regularly review. Times have changed since Little Britain first aired so it is not currently available on BBC iPlayer.”
Now, apart from IASIP and the earlier-mentioned shows, Netflix will add them to their list of shows that got a ban. This list also includes Angry boys, We Can Be Heroes, Summer Heights High, and Jonah From Tonga.
This is a policy change by the streaming media as they cut down on insensitive material from their platform. The move comes after the much-needed Black Lives Matter protests around different parts of the world, especially the United States.
