As you might have already guessed from the title; Notes From Dunblane discusses a very sensitive subject – school shootings. Something that has become an epidemic in the United States over the years.

Lessons from a School Shooting: Notes from Dunblane, takes a close look at how two very different communities cope with their immense grief and loss. It is a call to action of sorts. Moreover, it makes an effort to educate people about the inept gun laws in the United States at present.

A Friendship Is Formed

The Documentary follows Father Bob Weiss in America who is tasked with the responsibility of burying eight of the twenty child victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. Keeping his own grief in check, he tries to unite and placate the close-knit community of Newtown, Connecticut.

Consequently, that proves to be a difficult task to do, as he deals with his own PTSD from not being able to prevent the incident and the immense guilt at the loss of so many innocent lives. However, when he receives a letter from Father Basil O’Sullivan, a priest in Scotland, he realizes that he is not alone in feeling this way.

In 1996 Dunblane, Scotland something similar occurred. Sixteen children were murdered by a gunman at a local school. And, Father Basil was left with piecing the broken community back together.

As both the priests exchange letters and their relationship grows, they realize something has to change. They can not let this scenario happen all over again. Undoubtedly, they can not let more innocent citizens die.

What Notes From Dunblane Teaches Us

The main message viewers get from watching Notes From Dunblane is the lack the United States of America displayed to immediately enforce revamped gun laws after the Sandy Hook incident in 2012. Whereas, after the incident in Dunblane in 1996, Scotland immediately reformed its gun policies. In order to protect its citizens from harm.

Notes From Dunblane creates a vivid and stark contrast in how the government of Soctland and the government of the United States dealt with a similar tragedy. But had completely different responses.

And six years have passed since the tragic incident at Sandy Hook occurred. But the United States has failed to do anything proactive to prevent similar tragedies from happening.

Notably, statistics show that since 2012 there have been sixteen-hundred mass shootings in the United States. With two deadly shootings that happened this month in Maryland and Wisconsin.
