Last week, Alexis Ohanian’s Reddit resignation came as a surprise. A few days ago, he sat down with his wife, Serena Williams, and discussed his decision of stepping down.

While Serena Williams is a world-renowned star, her husband is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Reddit

In 2005, Alexis Ohanian and his friend, Steve Huffman, launched Reddit. It is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. At the time of its launch, their aim was to make it the front page of the internet. As of now, Alexis Ohanian’s Reddit is the 19th most visited website in the world. In 2017, he married Serena Willaims and welcomed their daughter. After being the CEO for 15 years, Ohanian stepped down as a member of the board in Reddit. In an Instagram post, he said:

It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do? I have resigned as a member of the Reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate.

I co-founded @reddit 15 years ago to help people find community and a sense of belonging.
It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do? I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to @kaepernick7’s @yourrightscamp
I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop.

After Alexis Ohanian’s Reddit decision, he sat down with Williams to discuss it.

During an episode of Serena Williams’ Instagram series, Serena Saturday, the couple talked about Alexis Ohanian’s Reddit decision. While Williams cleared that she had nothing to do with this, Ohanian explained why he took the decision. He said:

“I thought about what I could do beyond a social media post, beyond a donation. We need diversity at the highest levels of business now more than ever. Once I realized why I needed to do it, it became very easy.”

Serena Williams said:

“A lot of people might think I told you to do something, or I forced you. But he doesn’t listen to me, ever.”

Furthermore, Ohanian talked about their daughter, Olympia, and said:

“I wanted to put as much weight behind the gesture as I could because I felt I owed it to you and I owed it to her. One of the things that really broke me at some point in the last week, I was looking at Olympia, she’s 2½ now, and she is such a pure, just blank canvas. She only knows love. There is not an ounce of hate in her body. At some point, Olympia is going to have to have a talk with you, a talk with us, but especially a talk with you, about how she’s going to have to work that much harder, how she’s going to have to deal with this much more. That pisses me off.”

Hopefully, Alexis Ohanian’s Reddit decision will bring positive change.
