What The Porn Industry Can Teach Hollywood In Dealing With COVID-19?

An unlikely savior...

We’re very prone to make fun of the Porn Industry. It’s almost exclusively the butt of all our jokes. But, what if I told you that it can save Hollywood? Currently, the film industry is trying its best to figure out a way to resume production, while not contracting COVID-19. However, the porn industry can teach them a lesson, as it is better equipped than anyone to deal with infectious viruses.

There’s no secret that Hollywood has taken a gigantic hit because of Coronavirus. In March, that hit was worth around $20 billion, and it’s steadily increasing. Moreover, Hollywood is criminally unprepared for dealing with a pandemic. However, they have an unlikely savior in porn. So, that begs the question:

What does Porn have to offer?

Apart from sexual gratification, the porn industry has a lot to offer to Hollywood. This is because the industry came up with its own testing system back in the 90s. There’s no secret that for porn stars, the risk of contracting an STD is a massive one.

For that purpose, the porn industry has in place a set of procedures, according to which every porn star gets tested for STDs every 14 days. If anyone tests positive, all sets across the US are shut down, and aggressive contact tracing is done before the sets are allowed to reopen.

This is called the PASS (Performer Availability Scheduling Services), and it is spearheaded by Sharon Mitchell. She was a porn star, who is now a physician and created this system. The results are entered into a database, where producers check which performers are cleared for work in porn films. Without this model, porn sites and performers cannot sustain their work.

Lance Heart, a gay and straight porn star and producer said:

I don’t think I could be in this industry without it. That would be insane. Bareback s*x with strangers 20 times a month? It would be like the most dangerous job in the world,

And this is exactly the model that Hollywood or even countries can adopt and have adopted. For instance, South Korea has adopted a policy of mass testing of its population. This has kept its economy functional, without the need for a lockdown.

How can Hollywood put this into use?

The first question is, how can Hollywood put this into use? Well, the communications director for the Free Speech Coalition (which runs PASS), Mike Stabile believes Hollywood can easily put the porn industry’s model into use. He said:

When you look at the world at large, there’s an idea you’ll be tested once and then go back to work, but with coronavirus, it’s not that simple. We’re looking at a series of regular tests until this gets under control.

He believes that all industries, including Hollywood and porn, can learn from each other, despite the difference in their nature:

The challenges for sports, for Hollywood and the porn industry are all different but in reality, we each have things we can learn from each other.

A practical approach

There are several ways with which this policy can be adopted from porn. Firstly, the cast and the crew can be quarantined for a number of days, with regular testing after every 24 hours. Of course, testing has to get cheaper, but that will happen over time with more research and innovation.

The entire world can’t stay in lockdown forever, which is why Hollywood and other industries have to learn to adapt to this virus. Now that even the WHO is saying that Coronavirus is here to stay, Hollywood and everyone else must learn to live with it.
