It has been thirteen years since America Ferrera’s Emmy win for Ugly Betty. However, the actress has recently revealed that she did not get to enjoy the award. While the world celebrated her win, she thinks people around her did not think that she deserved it.

While it’s been ten years since its last season, Ugly Betty is still a cult favorite

Based on a Colombian telenovela, the show was developed by Silvio Horta. While it ran for only four seasons, Ugly Betty received massive ratings and love from the audience. The story revolves around a geeky and uncool Betty Suarez who lands a dream job at a fashion magazine. Throughout the show, Betty faces many hurdles and eventually, becoming the editor. Including America Ferrera, who plays the protagonist, the cast includes Vanessa Williams, Tony Plana, and Judith Light. Among other awards, Ferrera won Emmy, Gloden Globe, and SAG. Recently, America Ferrera expressed how much she enjoyed playing Betty Suarez and said:

“I loved this character, I loved this world. I loved my cast. To have the feeling that this character, this story, is so needed in the culture right now. I just have a gut instinct that it’s going to speak so strongly to so many people, myself included. … I loved every minute of being Betty.”

Recently, America Ferrera shared how she could not fully enjoy her Emmy win

She made an appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. While talking about her Emmy win, America Ferrera expressed how she felt skeptical and doubted herself. She said:

‘When I won the Emmy, I can’t bring myself to watch that because the only thing I remember about being on that stage, accepting that Emmy, was the feeling that no one in the room thought I deserved it. And that’s a shame. I was thinking “She doesn’t really deserve that. What is she really doing in that role? That role is not interesting enough, it’s not dark enough, it’s not edgy enough.” You know, all of the bulls***. Which doesn’t enter your mind on its own.’

According to America Ferrera, people around her also felt she did not deserve the award. She said:

‘There were people in my life perpetuating those narratives and making me feel like I hadn’t earned this moment. When I look back at that time, my heart aches for that 22-year-old girl, who didn’t get to really enjoy those moments.’

In order to grow and succeed, it is important to have genuine people around you. Hopefully, America Ferrera has understood that she absolutely deserved that award.
