All You Need To Know About The Met Gala | Secrets & History
A brief history of the star-studded gathering that did not happen this year.
The Met Gala is considered to be the Super Bowl of fashion by celebrities like André Leon Talley. This star-studded event is an amalgam of art and fashion and of the biggest parties of the year. Let’s take a look into how did it all start and what are some secrets of this spectacular event. (The Met Gala 2020 was postponed because of the Coronavirus pandemic).
How did it Begin?
It’ beginnings were rather humble. In 1948 Eleanor Lambert (fashion publicist). She introduced this intimate gathering to New York’s elite and the Met Gala Tickets used to cost $50 back then. The idea was to raise money for the costume institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Can you guess how much they pay for the Met Gala tickets now? Well, the price is a whopping $25,000 and one table are booked by these celebrities for up to $275,000. However, just like it is with the exclusive Ferrari cars, money does not guarantee your name on the guest list. The editor of fashion magazine Vogue, Anna Wintour, who is also the Chairwoman of Met Gala selects the guests herself.
Notable names like Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace have co-chaired the event in the 1990s and since then many fashion icons and celebs also got the opportunity as well. Princess of Hanover Caroline co-chaired the event in 2005. American singer Beyoncé in 2013. Donatella Versace, Amal Clooney, and Rihanna chaired the Met Gala in 2019.
What is the Met Gala Theme 2020?
When it started in 1948, the selected gathering did not have any theme but things are not the same anymore. After leaving her position as the Editor in Vogue, Diana Vreeland introduced the very first ‘The World of Balenciaga’ theme in 1973.
In 1974, singer Cher shocked everyone with the very first naked dress designed by Bob Mackie. The look was a hit and many gorgeous celebrities have worn it afterward. Some beauties who wore it are Beyoncé, Bella Hadid, and Kendall Jenner.
The theme in 2018 was called Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Camp: Noted on Fashion was 2019’s concept. This year’s event was canceled due to Coronavirus but if it were to happen, Met Gala Theme 2020 would’ve been About Time: Fashion & Duration.
It doesn’t matter if you’re Kendall Jenner or a Princess, everyone has to follow the following rules.
- You have to be 18 or above to attend the party.
- Social media and selfies are banned. However, that didn’t stop Kylie Jenner to take a bathroom selfie in 2017. Well, guess some rules are meant to be broken.
- No onion breath & no smoking at the Met Gala.
- No Red Wine: It can ruin the expensive dresses and Karlie Kloss learned this lesson first hand.
