Jennifer Lopez sued $150k over Instagram photo
You know are in America when people are suing each other despite the coronavirus lockdown. A photographer has dug up a photo from 2017 and is now suing Jennifer Lopez for $150,000. The plaintiff claims she used the picture without any permission or compensation to him. However, this isn’t the first time Jennifer Lopez has faced an Instagram photo lawsuit.
Jennifer Lopez sued over Instagram photo:
Lopez posted the picture back in 2017, dressed as Harlee of Shades of Blue. It has received more than 656 thousand likes. The photographer Steve Sands is seeking $150,000 in copyright infringement damages. Moreover, he went on to say that:
Defendants did not license the Photograph from Plaintiff for its Website, nor did Defendants have the Plaintiff’s permission or consent to publish the Photograph on its Website. [I am] entitled to statutory damages up to $150,000 per work infringed.
The lawyer Richard Liebowitz talked to E! News about the lawsuit:
This is an example of celebrities using the photographer’s pictures without permission to brand themselves on social media. The number of likes the photograph receives coupled with their number of social media followers is a tool to commercialize their posts.
Copyright infringement over paparazzi pics:
Jennifer Lopez is hardly the first celebrity to be sued over posting paparazzi pics. Gigi Hadid blasted them when she was also sued under similar circumstances:
These people make money off us everyday, LEGALLY stalking us day in and day out. For someone to take a situation where I was trying to be open, and sue me for a photo I FOUND ON TWITTER is absurd. If the person had just commented on my photo I would have been happy to tag and give credit.
It seems as social media becomes more and more mainstream, we are going to see more of these “stupid” lawsuits. Moreover, Lopez’s fans say this is just a pathetic attempt of the paparazzi to leach more money from the celebrities.
