Kevin Smith Had Beef With Harvey Weinstein
In the past few weeks, the disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been in the news a lot. He’s in jail convicted on charges of rape and sexual assault, and also suffers from Coronavirus. However, he also had beef with Kevin Smith, but it wasn’t on sexual assault or harassment. Instead, it was a financial issue!
Weinstein wasn’t clean financially either, says Kevin Smith
Smith made the movie Clerk with Weinstein’s Miramax in 1994. It’s a very critically acclaimed film, with a 7.7 rating on IMDB, and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Kevin Smith recently revealed that even after 26 years, he still hasn’t received all of the royalties owed by Miramax studios.
In an interview with Variety, Kevin Smith said:
This much I know. They bought “Clerks” for $227,000. And the movie went out and made $3 million at the box office and stuff. And it took seven years for us to see any profit from that movie. For seven years, they were like: “Nope, the movie is still not in profit.” And we were like “How?” And then there were things.
Despite this serious financial claim, Kevin Smith claims that money isn’t an issue for him. He revealed in the interview that Harvey Weinstein doesn’t have a great reputation when it comes to dealing with financial matters though.
Weinstein’s beef with Lord of the Rings director
Harvey Weinstein had issues with Warner Bros. over the Hobbit concerning finances as well. So much so that he tried to sell some of his film catalogs to Netflix for $25 million too right before the scandal. Moreover, he didn’t shy away from fights with directors on set as well. For instance, it was reported that he threatened to fire Peter Jackson from Lord of The Rings several times.
Even after going to jail, Harvey Weinstein continues to tarnish his legacy through his own deeds. At first, it was limited to severe cases of rape and sexual assault. However, with Kevin Smith’s revelation, it looks like the former owner of Miramax has a bad reputation with money as well. Thankfully, Smith was able to bear the financial setback. But, there must be several artists who couldn’t, and Weinstein should be held responsible for it.
