Joaquin Phoenix And Robert De Niro Had A Feud In Joker Rehearsals?
Director Todd Phillips surely came up with a work of art when he released his award-winning movie Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. While what we got to see was some exhilarating plot, perhaps what happened behind-the-scenes was not something as exciting. Reports suggest that the star of the show had a clash with Robert De Niro during the rehearsals for just one reason.
Joaquin Phoenix Clashed With De Niro Over Script?
While we all can agree that Phoenix’s superb performance gave him a deserving Oscar, the film is nothing without all characters and stars contributing equally. Then, what would happen if two stars in a movie cannot do well on-set? The discussion specifically related to Joaquin Phoenix and De Niro, who allegedly argued over script rehearsals.
According to GQ, Phoenix is not a big fan of table reads, whereas De Niro specifically demanded one. Table reads are when the entire cast and crew read through the entire script of a show/movie so that everyone is aware of the full story, and not just their scenes. For Phoenix, this is something that contradicts his style of acting – using anxiety to fuel his acting through spontaneity. This method conflicts with reading through lines, especially rehearsals. When De Niro found out about this, he told the director:
“Tell him he’s an actor and he’s got to be there. I like to hear the whole movie and we’re going to all get in a room and just read it.”
Phoenix then allegedly told Phillips:
“There’s no f*cking way I’m doing a read through.”
Ultimately, the main star agreed to do a read-through at De Niro’s company office. Perhaps during the rehearsal, he might not have put much effort into it so that to conserve his creativity while filming. We also learned that De Niro is Joaquin Phoenix’s favorite American actor, so perhaps that changed his decision and convinced him.
