India Lifts Ban On Gay Sex: What Next?

0 69

In a historic moment today, the supreme court of India has decided to lift one of the bans on the gay community. It was a unanimous verdict handed down by a five-judge panel that will has a huge impact both in India and across the world. With colors and gleeful smiles, it’s clear that the people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community of India couldn’t be more joyful. After years of suffering and hiding, these people can now roam free and be themselves.

The law was set in colonial times by the British when they were still controlling the sub-continental area. Section 377 was a law that penalized sexual intercourse between members of the same sex. The punishment was a harsh life sentence. From this to be finally able to love your partner freely is something that is bound to transform the Indian society.

More Battles to be Fought

Even though many people in India openly support this decision and think it was long due. There are still some people still not letting go of traditions and customs that have existed for years. Some Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religious groups are showing resistance and reluctance to accept this legal change. They see it as a threat to the stability of their society.

Many have said before that the real fight is of changing the mindsets of the people. You can easily change laws but will it amount to anything when the society isn’t letting real change occur. What happens when the law doesn’t hold any importance for the villagers who would shun out the people coming from the LGBT+ community. With a pluralistic society such as that of India, there exists extreme ideologies and mentalities that will be very hard to fight against. But nonetheless, these issues will have to be faced by everyone in the country. After all everyone thinks it’s going to affect society. Some believe the changes will only be positive, some think it’s an omen of dark times where India has forgot its moral values.

Bright Future for the LGBT Community

There is some disagreement in the society but that doesn’t take away the victory the LGBT community and its activists achieved after years of fighting. This shows that there will be an end to injustice at one point. And the voices of those entirely ignored before will be finally be given heed. The courts of India decided that enough time had passed and that they had grown past the obsolete and colonial rule.

It is with joy and confidence that the LGBT community will now walk down the streets. Their fight is certainly not over but at least they won the first battle. They were finally heard. This will give their whole community a morale boost and confidence like never before. Hopefully, there are better things in store for them.
