Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been dominating the news for the last few months. Meghan is probably the most famous royal female icon after Princess Diana. The couple seems quite happy after leaving the royal life behind, i.e. Megxit. However, leaving royalty may cost them, well, a fortune.
Meghan and Harry face an expensive lifestyle:
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California in March after stepping down from their duties. However, those duties came with their own benefits. That is, residence, transport, security, but more importantly, money. As Prince Harry and Meghan renounce all income sources tied to the Royal family, dark days may lie ahead. A royal expert claims the couple is facing a bill for $5 million a year for security alone:
They have spent the last few years not earning a living. As a royal, your expenses are covered but you don’t earn a salary. It will be very tough for them especially in the few months ahead. No-one knows when there is an end date to this. This could follow us for some time. For Harry and Meghan, on top of the difficulties they have had with the press, there has been this underlying issue of who pays for security moving forward.
President Trump ‘won’t pay for their security’:
The issue of the couple’s security arose when Donald Trump tweeted about it:
I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!

However, President Trump forgot that nobody asked or expected the US to pay. It was well understood that Harry and Meghan would get the ‘financial freedom’ they wanted when they moved to Malibu. The couple may have left the royalty, but they are still treated as such. And all that attention and gossip demands more security. Their security personnel consists of ex-SAS soldiers at a cost of £400 or $500 per operative per day. Moreover, the @sussexroyal brand isn’t making much money due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not leaving the spotlight anytime sooner.
