What We Expect from Little Women’s Modern Movie Adaptation
Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is finally up for a movie adaptation again. This time from Greta Gerwig. The film is going to start filming next year. And casting decisions are under progress. Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan, and Timothée Chalamet will be joining the star cast for Little Women.
The Plot Behind ‘Little Women’
Little Women is the story of the four March sisters who live with their mother in England. Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy struggle to support themselves while their father fights the Civil War. Now that the family has lost its fortune, the March sisters face continuous challenges as they run the household. But during the journey, they develop a close bond with their wealthy neighbor Theodore Laurence.
As things unravel, each of the girls has to battle their inner demons. While Jo tries to tame her tomboyish ways, Meg has to forget her love for wealth, and Beth conquers her shyness when Amy sacrifices her aristocratic pride. As the sisters grow and develop, their mother Marmee continues to guide them with her religious beliefs.
The family structure and bonds change when the sisters fall in love with unexpected circumstances. And tie the knots with unexpected people. Towards the end, each of their different households flourishes in their own different ways. The March family celebrates its happy occasions with the extended members now.
First Movie Adaptation
Greta Gerwig’s movie is not the first adaption of Little Women. Rather, the first film came out in 1994 and this time it’s going to be a modern and better structure of it. Gillian Armstrong directed the first edition. And the star cast included Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, and Kristen Dunst.
Previously, Little Women was awarded 3 and a half stars by the Chicago Sun-Times. It was considered to be an intelligent movie that was carefully crafted. Unlike the soft-edged children’s movie that it appeared to be, the 1994 edition was in fact attention-grabbing.
The film opened at the US Box Office grossing $5.3 million. And over its first weekend out, it took the total earnings to $50.1 million. Keeping in view that the entire budget of the movie was $18 million, it was termed as a success.
The Need For A Modern ‘Little Women’ Movie
Little Women has its idea solely revolving around three women. With our entertainment industry being dominated by male-centered movies, we could do with one like this.
The modern adaptation is in a better place than the 1994 movie. With the feminist movements at its peak, the timing for a movie that has women as the central characters are perfect. The theme is ideal with regard to the current progress of feminism and women’s rights in society. Stereotypical ideologies are broken to a greater extent now. Women based stories are given more layers and depth these days. The story of young women and how they deal with inner demons during the struggle of supporting themselves financially is just what’s needed.
Given the 1994 version, this modern adaptation of Little Women will certainly be more advanced. The timings for it are perfect, not to mention the younger cast and improved film-making methodologies.
