Grey’s Anatomy Cancels Production; To Air only 21 Episodes this Season!
That's a bummer but fair move on the channel's part!
To say that the coronavirus pandemic has shaken the entertainment industry would be an understatement. Many TV shows and movies across the globe have delayed production. In a disappointing turn of events, we now know that Grey’s Anatomy season 16 is among these shows. However, it hasn’t only postponed production, it has stopped it completely!
Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 will Now Air only 21 Episodes!
A little over 2 weeks ago, Grey’s Anatomy made an exemplary move by halting production. By then, the COVID-19 coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) pandemic had already started putting down roots in the US.
The original plan for the current season of Grey’s Anatomy was to air 25 episodes. At the time it stopped production, 21 episodes had been filmed. Everything seemed normal at first. Everyone thought that the shutdown wouldn’t last past 2 weeks.
However, things have only gotten more serious with time. Due to this, the medical series won’t be resuming production for the ongoing season and will end with episode 21.
The new season finale (“Put on a Happy Face,”) will air on April 9. Deborah Pratt has helmed it, while Mark Driscoll and Tameson Duffy have penned it.
Mystery Surrounding the 4 Unfilmed Episodes…
Even though Grey’s Anatomy season 16 will be short by 4 episodes, we can expect those to air in the future. ABC has already renewed it for a 17th season. So, whether the original final 4 episodes of this season will air as a special or along with the new season remains a mystery. There’s even a chance that the series will continue without these episodes.
Krista Vernoff (show-runner and executive producer) has assured the show’s fans that the story will continue in season 17.
It is interesting to note that all episodes of Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy spinoff show, were filmed before the close downs. So, expect it to air without any trouble.
To be clear: there are still two Season 16 episodes left to air!!! And we will resume our storytelling in Season 17! 💜 https://t.co/VplTNYhOhp
