Harvey Weinstein gets COVID-19

Recently, Harvey Weinstein, the convicted rapist, was transferred from NYC’s Rikers Island to the Wende Correctional Facility. However, after testing positive for COVID-19, he is in medical isolation now. New York State’s Department of Corrections representatives have not confirmed the news as they cannot comment on someone’s medical record. Moreover, Harvey Weinstein’s personal rep says he cannot confirm what he does not know.

Weinstein was moved on March 18, 2020. Since then, he and another inmate have been isolated after being diagnosed with Coronavirus. The security facility has a capacity of 961 prisoners. On the other hand, Rikers, where he was previously held, has around 40 inmates that were diagnosed with COVID-19. The time matches with Harvey Weinstein’s diagnosis.

Sources could not confirm the primary source of Harvey’s infection. He either got it from the hospital or from the security facility.

Prison & Sentence

Harvey Weinstein got a sentence of 23 years in prison. He was found guilty of rape and sexual assault. Since he already has health issues, the novel Coronavirus can worsen the situation.

While the officials are neither commenting nor confirming the diagnosis, the state has forbidden to transfer inmates from one facility to the other. Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, said:

There is no better breeding ground for this virus than a closed environment such as a correctional facility.

Moreover, visitors of inmates are not allowed anymore.
