Supergirl star opens up about transphobic episode
Hit TV series “SuperGirl” is now tackling a very important social issue: violence against the transgender community. Nicole Maines’ Dreamer tackles the issue head-on. In the last season, the series main came out as a transgender. And she did so in a powerful interview with Kara. The interview was aimed at broadening peoples’ thinking and making them understand that it’s okay to be different.
But unfortunately like in the real world, not everyone is happy and accepting of the fact that someone’s different. In Sunday’s episode “Reality Bytes” Nia’s roommate, Yvette (Roxy Wood) is attacked by a hater. And the hater wants to send a message to Dreamer that the National City will not accept a transgender superhero. And the city wants her gone.
What Nicole Maines has to say
In an interview with Entertainment, Nicole Maines talks about the episode saying:
“This [episode’s theme], I think, is a lot realer than we normally deal with on the show. A lot of the time we make analogies on the show and we kind of show parallels to the real world in our fictional setting with capes and flying. To get to tackle a very real issue while still having the capes and the flying and everything was really exciting to me, and I was really looking forward to it all season.”
She continued the interview appreciating everyone’s support on the show. Moreover, she applauded the crew for helping it make the “best possible episode ever”.
