Manny Mua Exposes Makeup Revolution
Manuel Gutierrez, also known as “Manny Mua”, is a famous Boy Beauty Vlogger. He recently uploaded a video on his YouTube channel and talked about how Makeup Revolution’s new product is pretty much similar to his Lunar Beauty highlighter.
Let’s Take A Look At Makeup Revolution’s History:
For all those people who don’t know, the Makeup Revolution was launched in 2014 by Adam Minto & Tom Allsworth. And it is very famous for creating dupes of high-end brands’ products, with the aim to make standard makeup products available for everyone.
In the past few years, Makeup Revolution has come up with dupes of many expensive brands, like Too Faced, Urban Decay, Beverly Hills, Kat Von D and many more. And now it has presumably created dupe of Manny’s Lunar Beauty Highlighter.
Makeup Revolution Made Manny Mua Very Upset:
If you fast forward the video to 1:25, you will see how Manny is explaining the similarities between the two products.
“You guys can see this is Lunar Venus as my component. This is something that I created with my design team. This exact molding here is the exact mold as well.”
He further explains the reason for creating the video. He is deeply concerned about Makeup Revolution creating the Glass Crystal Component pretty much Identical to his brand Lunar Beauty’s Highlighter.
“About two weeks ago, Makeup revolution announced that they’re coming out with crystallized collection and in that was this highlighter”.
Fans Showing Concern In Regard To Manny’s Product:
A lot of fans showed their concern in regard to Manny’s Product on Makeup Revolutions page. Every single person was like
“why does packaging of the highlighter look exactly the same (as Manny’s)“.
The dye lines of both products are exactly the same. Manny’s compact highlighter is more prismatic while Makeup Revolution’s compact highlighter has this silvery effect.
Manny further explained how he has spent thousands of dollars to create this custom made design with the help of his team. And it was not supposed to be copied.
He also shared details of his custom tooled MUA Moon Prism Powder Compact. And if you take a closer look at the attached document, you will be able to see the tooling details and the general specifications of the mold.
He also shared the dye lines of what his team created back in 2018.
Manny says he was inspired from the prismatic theme
Manny Mua mentions how he is super inspired by the prismatic theme. And he totally understands that he is not the only person who came up with this design. Mac has a really cool prismatic like compact too:
I created it with my design team and my factory until now and we are seeing a compact that is out here and obviously I can’t speak to makeup revolution. I don’t know what they were thinking”
He further attached a thread of comments from this person “humancrayonmua” with “Revolution Sally” who is on the product team of Revolution Beauty.
If you take a look at Revolution Sally’s comment, your blood will start boiling. She shares the following:
“This was not a dupe. Our development team had no idea, just wanted to develop a range with the idea of shattered glass. Any similarity will be due to shared factories, not any intention.
And when Manny Mua reached out to his factory in further concern of his shared custom made mold compact. They replied back with a huge no.
Manny further explains the only way his component could be copied is:
“to take my component and put it into a 3D printer and 3D print this exact thing and recreate it identically”.
We totally understand the reason behind Manny Mua’s frustration now. He explains in detail how he has such a small indie brand. And when a high-end brand allegedly copies your design, it makes things really worse.
Makeup Revolution Responds Back To Manny Mua:
Makeup Revolution mentions in the post that they were presented with the component by several third parties in a publicly attended Fair last year in March. They thought the component design is freely available. Their product which is part of the Revolution’s Glass Collection is recently launched.
On the launch of their product, Manny Mua Lunar Beauty’s legal team made contact with Makeup Revolution and couldn’t present any evidence of alleged copyright or trade dress rights of the design which Manny claimed were at risk.
After seeing Manny Mua’s video which he recently posted on his YouTube channel, the Makeup Revolution has taken immediate steps to remove their product from the market just for the sake of courtesy.
They closed the caption with:
“We are not here to crush spirits of other beauty trends. And that we have reached out to Manny to discuss this privately.”

Revolution were presented this component by several third parties at a publicly attended trade fair in March 2019 and were led to believe that it was a freely available design. Our product – part of Revolution’s Glass Collection – launched in February 2020. We were unaware of Lunar Beauty’s product launch. On launch of our product, Lunar Beauty’s legal team contacted us, but, despite our requests, failed to supply any evidence of his alleged copyright or trade dress right in his design, or even to identify or provide images or illustrations of the product that he claimed were at issue. • Having seen MannyMUA’s video, released on Sunday 15 March 2020, in which he produces documentation purportedly showing the componentry tooling of his product (even if not any protectable copyright or trade dress rights in that product), as a matter of courtesy and out of an abundance of caution, we have taken the immediate steps to remove the product from sale and will notify our distributors to do the same. • Our intention is not to crush the spirit of entrepreneurialism. Our intention is to make beauty trends affordable for all. We do our best not to make mistakes like this, but if we do, we take steps to make things right. And for that reason, we have acted quickly and passionately. • We have reached out to Manny to discuss this privately.
