The coronavirus pandemic is having a bad toll on all of us. Most countries have declared a health emergency. People are hoarding goods in their homes. In fact, some have even gone on to declare this a catastrophic pandemic. However, we are all familiar with this scenario. It is a common theme in most movies, which are now becoming a part of reality. So let’s note down some movies which tried to portray an outbreak similar to coronavirus:
‘Contagion’ is the perfect fit:
The 2011 movie has suddenly climbed the iTunes charts to #3. Undoubtedly, the movie is eerily similar to the current scenario. A woman (Gwyneth Paltrow) comes home to the US after a business trip to Hong Kong, China. She feels unwell but dismisses it off as jet lag. However, in 24 hours, she and her son are dead. The movie stars Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Lawrence Fishburne.
Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection. For doctors and administrators at the CDC, several days pass before anyone realizes the gravity of this new infection. Similarly, the coronavirus outbreak also started from Wuhan in China. It has now spread to 149 countries through tourists and businessmen. Trump has recently declared a national emergency over the pandemic. The total reported cases are 150,000 and 5,620 deaths as of 14 March.
Sci-fi movies that predicted coronavirus:
Another example is the 1971 adaptation The Andromeda Strain. It was written by famed author Michael Crichton, also known for writing Westworld and Jurassic Park. His concepts revolve around technological breakthroughs that eventually endanger humanity’s existence. A more unrealistic but popular movie is World War Z. As Brad Pitt races around the world to find Patient Zero and discover a cure, he realizes even preemptive caution cannot hold back a deadly epidemic.
However, there is one more theme all these movies have in common. It is panic and distrust. People panic very easily in scenarios of global catastrophes. Whereas, the situation demands critical thinking and protective measures, instead of buying lots of toilet paper. In such cases of global uncertainty, there needs to be complete transparency. Undoubtedly, scientists are the best ones to look up during the coronavirus pandemic. They do not have any hidden agenda, unlike what Flat-Earthers would have you believe. So it is essential to dismiss rumors and fact check your information. So do enjoy your break while watching these sci-fi movies, but don’t take them too seriously!
