‘Beauty and the Beast’ prequel in works at Disney+
Disney+ is going to develop a prequel of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Josh Gad and Luke Evans will reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou. The show will be a 6-episode limited series. Moreover, Emma Watson and Dan Stevens might cameo in the developing show. The untitled project is still in its early stages of development.
‘The Beauty and the Beast’ will have musicals
The prequel will be an origin story of Gaston and LeFou. The limited show will be a six-episode musical event. Thus, Alan Menken is also rumored to return as a composer. His songs and tunes for Aladdin, Pocahontas, Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast have won him 8 Oscars. Thus fans are excited to see what the composer will bring to the show. Moreover, Once Upon A Time creators, Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will be showrunners. Star Josh Gad himself will join as showrunner. Altogether, the trio will also write scripts and executive produce.
LeFou is gay?
The reimagination of the animated film drew a lot of backlash from everyone. But not because it was a half-assed attempt at a reboot. Actually, the movie drew controversy because of its portrayal of LeFou’s character. Conservatives criticized the apparent queerness of the characters in a “kids” movie. Whereas many others bashed Disney for not depicting the character as ‘openly gay’. The show may give us answers as it explores the personality of LeFou.
The prequel will be a success or a flop?
It is too early to say anything for a while. It feels like Disney is nitpicking now. In order to overthrow Netflix, Disney will develop a show out of any character or storyline they want. Moreover, they have the budget and resources to do so. However, given the huge success of Beauty and the Beast, nothing is set in stone. The reboot grossed $1.2 billion worldwide on a budget of less than $200 million.
