Twitter Stories aka Fleets, Paves Way for #RIPTwitter
Users fear the micro-blogging website Twitter will become like other social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat
Micro-blogging website Twitter that allows users to write anything up to 140 characters is introducing Twitter stories. The new feature, Fleets, will see posts vanishing after 24 hours of writing. It’s similar to Facebook stories and Instagram stories. Users, however, aren’t really happy about it and #RIPTwitter starts trending on the internet.
What is Twitter stories (Fleets)?
According to Kayvon Beykpour(Product Lead), the new feature Twitter stories is in a testing phase right now. If implemented, Fleets would allow users to share thoughts only with people they want to.
Posting publicly can feel “permanent and performative”. It can intimidate some users. We’re hoping that Twitter stories (Fleets) can help people share the fleeting thoughts that they would have been unlikely to Tweet.
Twitter’s new feature will see Tweets vanish after 24 hours and can be seen by clicking on the profile icon. No one will be allowed to reply, like or publicly comment on the disappearing post. The function is similar to that of Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram and this is exactly what users are dreading.
What is #RIPTwitter?
As soon as the news of this new way of Tweeting became viral, people turned to their social media to write against it. They believe that the microblogging website’s reputation is at risk because of Twitter stories. The fans want it to look apart from social media platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram.
One user(@Williemoeday) reacted to Twitter Stories.
Good grief. Stop making more than it needs to be. Nobody wants Facebook-type features. We just want an EDIT option, for crying out loud.
My favorite social media reaction comes from @Mckenzieas93.
“We have a new feature called Fleets”
Everyone: But we only need an EDIT button.
Twitter: You now have Twitter stories that last a day.
Currently, the system is only being tested in Brazil and has not yet made it to the microblogging website. Dankanator will keep you updated.
