Katy Perry and Taylor Swift | The Frenemy Timeline
Hollywood's most famous bad blood!
In an exclusive interview, Katy Perry talked about her friend-turned-enemy, Taylor Swift. Both singers were best friends for a while, but it got really ugly between them back in 2017. Before we discuss Perry’s recent comments, let’s recap their wavering relationship:
Katy Perry “steals” Taylor Swift’s dancers
December 2013 can be stated as the starting point of Taylor’s and Katy’s feud. It was all perfect before this month. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift often did duet performances and retweeted each other. What happened was that Lockhart Brownlie was Perry’s go-to dancer. He and two other backup performers had been with Perry for a while then. They asked Perry if they could go along Taylor’s tour as she was mostly free that year.
Being a good friend, Katy Perry allowed them, provided they add a 30-day contingency clause. So that they can join her back if she starts her own tour. When the time came for Katy’s tour, she informed the dancers beforehand so they could talk with Taylor Swift’s management. The dancers went ahead and were fired. According to Katy, she tried to contact Taylor and resolve the issue but it was useless.
Taylor Swift releases ‘Bad Blood’
Talking to the Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift revealed her side of the story without naming Katy Perry herself. She was talking about an upcoming song in her album, Bad Blood, which was apparently pointed towards a fellow artist. The lyrics would focus on women, as both friends and enemies. Swift said that:
She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies. And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.
Swift debuted the music video next year featuring her “squad” of friends. The song can be described as the epitome of the fight between friends. Katy Perry also posted a subliminal tweet:
Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing…

Katy Perry extends party invitation
Talking about her album’s release before the Grammys, Katy Perry was asked whether certain people would be invited to her party. She replied:
[Adele and Taylor Swift] are invited. It is just up to their schedules.
However, Katy Perry also released a fragrance amusingly titled Mad Love. (Ref: Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood Lyrics)
Katy Perry’s diss track Swish Swish
Before her album’s release, Katy Perry commented on her fight with Taylor Swift:
Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period, end of story. But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey.
A week later she releases Swish Swish, alongside Nicki Minaj who also had some issues with Swift. In her Carpool Karaoke with James Corden, she went ahead to say that she would like to turn the other cheek but could not tolerate this character assassination. They both continue with their snarky comments and veiled threats to each other.
The beginning of the end
During her album’s release, Katy Perry decided to get the feud over with and apologized to Taylor Swift on a live stream:
I am ready to let it go, I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her. I think it’s actually like, I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world. There’s a lot of other things out there in the world that people need to be focused on, and I truly, like, God bless her on her journey.
This positive message was appraised by both Swift’s and Perry’s fans. After this statement, the feud between both of them seemed to cool down.
Katy Perry sends a literal olive branch to Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift posted a dramatic Instagram story just before going on-stage at her first concert on a tour. The story featured a gift-boxed olive branch with a note from Perry that said:
Hello old friend— I’ve been doing some reflecting on past miscommunications and hard feelings between us. I really want to clear the air. I’m deeply sorry…
Taylor Swift captioned the story with “Thank You, Katy. It really means a lot. <3”
In an interview, Katy Perry was asked how she felt when she was featured in Swift’s video. The video in question is You Need to Calm Down music video (released in June 2019). She replied that they don’t have the close relationship they had before due to their busy schedules, but they text a lot.
Even though it was difficult, it was important to make that appearance in the music video because people want people to look up to. We wanted it to be an example of unity. Forgiveness is important. It’s so powerful. If you can forgive your enemy, that’s amazing. As difficult as it is!
