Rihanna receives President’s Award for philanthropy work

The 51st NAACP Image Awards took place in California on Saturday. The NAACP Image Awards is an annual awards ceremony hosted by the US-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It aims to honor outstanding performances in television, film, music, and literature.

Wearing a purple Givenchy Haute couture dress, music artist Rihanna looked stunning at the event. She received an important accolade; the President’s Award for her philanthropy work. She founded the Clara Lionel Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to emergency preparedness, in honor of her grandparents. In addition, she has done charitable work for other foundations too, like Raising Malawi, UNICEF and more.

Rihanna was also recognized as Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year in 2017 as she raised millions of dollars for education and disaster relief.

An inspiring speech that calls for equality

While accepting her award last night, Rihanna, with very few words conveyed an extremely powerful message. She pleaded for unity and support, especially from non-black communities.

OK, I’m going to try to keep this simple because tonight is not really about me because the purpose is bigger than me, right? It’s not bigger than us together, but it’s bigger than me because my part is a very small part of the work that’s being done in this world and the work that has yet to be done.

She further highlighted how we all must support each other, regardless of gender, color or class. That we need to realize we can only fix the world and it’s problems ‘together’.

And if there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together.

We can’t do it divided. I cannot emphasize that enough. We can’t let the de-sensitivity seep in. The, ‘If it’s your problem, then it’s not mine; it’s a woman’s problem; it’s a black people problem; a poor people problem.

She continued to urge everyone listening to speak up, take a step further, and to be a part of the protests, marches, and efforts that call for equality.

I mean, how many of us in this room have colleagues and partners and friends from other races, sexes, religions? Show of hands.

Well, they want to break bread with you, right? They like you? Well, then this is their problem, too.

So when we’re marching and protesting and posting about the Michael Brown juniors and Atatiana Jeffersons of the World, tell your friends to pull up.
