Parasite has been in the news for all the good reasons in the past two months. Ever since it’s Oscar wins, people haven’t gotten enough of talking about that movie. However, it has now caught the attention of the US President and it wasn’t in a pleasant way either. Donald Trump has criticized Parasite’s Oscar wins at a public rally for his 2020 Presidential campaign.
What did the US President actually say?
The US President said:
“And the winner is a movie from South Korea”. What the hell was that all about? We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of it they give them the best movie of the year? Was it good? I don’t know.
It seems that Donald Trump had a problem with a South Korean film winning at the Oscars. He further hinted on the trade tensions between the US and South Korea as a reason to not promote their films in North America. As if that wasn’t enough, Trump also didn’t show much praise for Brad Pitt either. In his Oscar acceptance speech, Brad Pitt took a dig at the Senate and the US President’s impeachment trial. As a response, Trump had this to say about the actor,
And then you have Brad Pitt. I was never a big fan of his. He got up, said a little wise-guy statement. Little wise guy, he’s a little wise guy.

Understandably, Donald Trump’s comment on Parasite’s Oscar wins was not received well by many. Neon, the North American distributor of Parasite, tweeted “Understandable, he can’t read”.

Other than that, there was a wave of backlash from all corners of twitter. #Trump became one of the top trends again on twitter, though that shouldn’t come off as a surprise. Moreover, most of the critics were saying that this was a move to target some of the xenophobic elements from among his campaign. Stirring these kinds of emotions against a foreign film could prove beneficial for his bid for the 2020 Presidential elections.
Our Verdict on Parasite
Regardless of what Donald Trump had to say about Parasite’s Oscar win, we believe that it does not take anything away from Bong Joon-ho and his incredible team. They did a wonderful job with the film and made an instant classic. Furthermore, many of the iconic directors of Hollywood, including Martin Scorsese, had nothing but positive remarks for the film and its victory. Therefore, such a political controversy doesn’t take anything away from Parasite and its hard-fought Oscar win.
