Just like every year, the anticipation around Oscars 2020 was great. Although the results were a bit predictable, there were many best and hilarious moments throughout the ceremony. From the red carpet to the last award category, this year was colorful and eventful like always.

The best moments of Oscars 2020 began at the red carpet.

Waad Al-Kateab

As we all know, the fashion of red carpet is an essential part of any event. However, the Oscars red carpet holds a lot of importance. Many times, celebrities use their clothes to make bold statements. Similarly, the director and Narrator of For Sama, Waad al-Kateab communicated an important message. She wore a gown with Arabic poem embroidered on it at Oscars 2020, which translated as “We dared to dream and we will not regret dignity”.

Natalie Portman

Another celebrity who made a statement on Oscars 2020 red carpet was Natalie Portman. She wore a Dior cape which had a list of all female directors embroidered who were snubbed at the Oscars 2020. This became one of the best moments on the red carpet ever. While talking about it, she said:

“I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in my subtle way.”

Chris Rock and Steve Martin began the show with a not-opening monologue

This year, there was no host for the Oscars which meant no opening monologue. However, Chris Rock and Steve Martin launched right into a hilarious sermon. While talking about the no-host policy of Oscars 2020, they joked about being demoted. Furthermore, Chris Rock joked about Jeff Bezos and cops’ relationship with black people. Some of his jokes are as follows:

“Mahershala Ali has two Oscars. You know what that means when cops pull him over? Nothing.”

“Jeff Bezos is so rich he got divorced and is still the richest man in the world. He saw Marriage Story and thought it was a comedy.”

“Marty, I’ve got to tell you I love the first season of The Irishman.”

At Oscars 2020, a female composer won an award after 20 years.

After 1997, the award for best original score went to a female composer. Icelandic composer,  Hildur Guðnadóttir, won the award for Joker. In her acceptance speech, she said:

 “To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up. We need to hear your voices.”

Parasite makes history at Oscars 2020

For the first time ever, a non-English language film won the awards for best picture, director, original screenplay and international feature film. Not only that, the director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, was a delight throughout the ceremony. After winning the best international feature film award, he revealed that he was going to drink till the next morning. Surely, he was in the mood to celebrate. During his acceptance speech, Bong Joon Ho honored the director, Martin Scorsese. He said:

Thank you. After winning best international feature, I thought I was done for the day and was ready to relax. Thank you so much. When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is that “The most personal is the most creative.” That quote is from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win.

Later, he apologized for having too many trophies to get engraved in the engravers section.

Now that Oscars 2020 is over, we are all ready for what this year has in store for us.
