Hollywood’s most anticipated night of the year is here! The Oscars are the most prestigious awards in entertainment which can be bestowed. It is a matter of great privilege to get nominated for an Oscar category. It singles you out from the thousands of movies released annually, from legendary actors and actresses. However, the release of Oscar nominees is still shocking each year. Great performances of Robert de Niro and Adam Sandler were snubbed and even a hit like Frozen II was not nominated for Best Animated Feature Film. This year, however, some winners have surprised fans all around the world, and we will analyze them one by one.

Best Picture:

In a group of movies like 1917, Joker, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and the Irishman, the biggest bombshell of the night was Parasite winning Best Picture award. The South Korean film has become the first non-English movie to win the Academy’s most prestigious award. Parasite became quite a sensation after its many nominations. Bong Joon-Ho has become a Korean celebrity after winning Best Director Award at the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs.

Parasite is undoubtedly the best international feature film of 2019. But when compared to gems like the Joker and 1917, you really begin to wonder if it completely deserves the Best Picture award.  The closest call made in Oscars 2020 is probably this winning nomination. Parasite has a Tomatometer rating of 99%.Parasite wins surprisng Best Picture Oscar!

Best Director:

Again, in an elite squad of directors who are legends of Hollywood, Bong Joon-ho win is unprecedented. The Oscar nominees for Best Director were Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Todd Philips, and Sam Mendes. They collectively have 14 Oscar nominations for the Best Director award. Quentin Tarantino is still Oscar-less, even after directing must-watch classics like Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards. Whereas, Joker was Todd Philips’ first nomination as Best Director.

Bong Joon-ho‘s movie about class division has led the awards season this year. It was nominated for six Oscar categories and managed to bag four. Bong could not hold back his delight, as he stared at his trophy and giggling. He also thanked Scorsese and Tarantino, as they were his idols. He also didn’t fail to mention the other nominees: Philips and Mendes.

Best Actress | Oscars 2020:

Renee Zellweger said it best herself:

I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again: Cynthia, Scarlett, Charlize, Saoirse. I have to say, boy, it is an honor to be considered in your company.

Her performance as Judy Garland in the biography was top-notch. It seemed as if she portrayed the character to life. However, the movie seemed to be little else than that. Fellow nominations were Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and Saoirse Ronan (Little Women.) Comparing the performances of all these talented actresses, Renee Zellweger winning the Oscar was certainly surprising in my controversial opinion.
