With an opening box office of $13M, Birds of Prey has earned a Rotten Tomatoes (Tomato-meter) rating of 82%. The latest addition to the DC Extended Universe has an IMDB rating of 6.8 and an audience score of 84%. About 250 critics have reviewed Birds of Prey. (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn.)
With a fresh perspective, some new friends, and loads of fast-paced action, Birds of Prey captures the colorfully anarchic spirit of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
Birds of Prey | Non-Spoiler Review:
DC Comics is back with a bang or Harley Quinn’s baseball bat to be exact. Filled with Quinn-sanity, the movie is full of quippy comedy and eye-popping action sequences. It is the trademark of Margot Robbie’s unhinged character who is dealing with the aftermath of Joker’s breakup. However, Birds of Prey is not a solo Harley Quinn movie. She is with a gang of misfits; two mismatched vigilantes Huntress & Black Canary, and a teenage pickpocket Cassandra Cain. Not failing to mention, cop Renee Montoya also teams up with them. Together, they face Black Mask (or Roman Sionis) played by Ewan McGregor. In the grubby setting of Gotham City, Black Mask hunts these Birds of Prey in a beautifully choreographed superhero movie. The R-rated film is full of profanity and defiantly feminist in a world full of movies made on male superheroes and villains.
The success of Birds of Prey is being compared with its counterpart movies in the MCU, like any other superhero movies nowadays. It feels like an attempt to duplicate the quirky fun of GOTG with the anti-hero sequences of Deadpool. But to be honest, it was an entertaining attempt. DCEU has certainly learned from the hell of a mess Suicide Squad made. All critics accede, however, that Birds of Prey has emancipated women. From discussing rape culture to the discrimination of women (either hero or villain), Birds of Prey certainly touches over some sensitive topics. It certainly feels that the movie is full of missed opportunities. DCEU could exploit the characters more to build a better storyline.
Comic book fans are certainly glad to see their favorite female characters team-up. The audience score is somewhat in accordance with the critic reviews. However, the box office revenue has been utterly disappointing. It seems as if Suicide Squad was such a huge flop that it undermined DC’s ability to deliver on a solo Harley Quinn movie. Still, die-hard fans going to the theaters this weekend stated that the movie was on par with their expectations.
