The Awards season is in full swing and Oscars 2020 happens to be right around the corner. While original work has its own prestige, an adapted screenplay is equally important for the sustenance of the film industry. When it comes to the Academy Award for the Best Adapted Screenplay, 5 strong nominees emerge. The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, and Two Popes are the nominees for the said category this year.
An interesting pool of nominations, we have to admit. However, only one screenplay will be able to call itself an Oscar-winning adaptation after this weekend. Here’s our prediction on which adapted screenplay will earn that right!
Little Women: A Winner for the Woke
Written and Directed by Greta Gerwig, this film is based on the novel of the same name. Firstly, Little Women is an outstanding film and deserves all the praise that it has amassed. However, the only reason why we are picking it to win here is that we believe that the committee sees this as an opportunity to cancel out the criticism that erupted after no women Directors were nominated for the Best Director Award. Regardless, the film deserves all the recognition it can get!
The Irishman | Oscars 2020
A screenplay to remember for the ages, but lacking the elements required to topple the competition.
The Two Popes
The film based on Anthony McCarten’s play “The Pope” surely poses a threat to all other nominees in the said category. However, it is hard for us to imagine it outlasting the likes of Little Women and Jojo Rabbit.
Joker | Oscars 2020
Despite the pop culture fanatics (including us!) campaigning for Joker to bag all the Academy Awards it has been nominated for, we have to swallow the bitter pill and agree that it might not ace the category in question. Joker is expected to win a couple of Academy Awards falling in other categories, but that should be it!
It is one of the favorites heading into the Oscars 2020. This screenplay is based on Caging Skies, a book by Christine Leunens. This hit adaptation (written and directed by Taika Waititi) is coming fresh off a Golden Globe win. However, it might succumb to Little Women at the 92nd Academy Awards.
What are your thoughts on the Best Adapted Screenplay nominees? Do you see a clear winner? We’d love to find out!
