Amber Heard and Johnny Depp – A Timeline of Accusations

The most chaotic separation of Hollywood!

Johnny and Amber’s separation has probably been the messiest in the history of Hollywood. Recently, audiotapes have emerged which proves Amber actually subjected him to abuse. But where did it all start and how did it come to this? It all began when Johnny Depp (then 51) and Amber Heard (then 28) got married on 3 Feb 2015. They had been engaged for 2 years then.

May 2016:

After 15 months of marriage, Amber Heard files for divorce. She said that the marriage couldn’t work anymore due to “irreconcilable differences.” 2 days later, she filed a domestic violence restraining order against Depp. In the same documents, she also filed for $50,000 monthly support. Amber Heard states “During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me.” Johnny’s representative replied, “Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation, and lies about his personal life.”

August 2016:

Heard and Depp reach a divorce settlement out of court. Johnny Depp agreed to pay her $7 million while Amber dismissed her domestic violence petition. The former couple released a joint statement: “Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”  Amber Heard donated most of it to American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

December 2016:

Johnny Depp’s legal team filed $100,000 in sanctions to Amber Heard for pursuing further litigation. According to them, Heard “continues to needlessly litigate a case which is settled, all while parading in front of the media in a desperate attempt to extend her 15 minutes of fame.” Meanwhile, Heard’s attorney said, “It is just another lame attempt by Mr. Depp and his team to not pay my client the money she is owed.”

January 2017:

The divorce finalized after 8 months. Meanwhile, Depp’s motion to fine Amber $100k is also denied by a judge.

December 2018:

After two years of relatively calm waters, Amber Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post. Without mentioning Johnny by name, she detailed her domestic abuse. She wrote about how she had experienced abuse from an early age. Ironically, she also wrote:

I had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse.

January 2019:

Johnny Depp’s attorney filed a “list of evidence that will disprove the fraudulent allegations against Mr. Depp.” The filing also included text messages, security tapes, sworn affidavits, and eyewitness statements. This evidence was reportedly used in a defamation lawsuit against The Sun who called Depp a wife-beater.

March 2019:

Johnny Depp filed a $50M lawsuit against Amber Heard over the Washington Post op-ed. Depp claims that Amber’s allegations are an “elaborate hoax” in the hope of gathering “positive publicity” and to “advance her career”. Amber had an affair with her ex Elon Musk, he claims. The lawsuit also alleges that:

“Ms. Heard also knew that her elaborate hoax worked: as a result of her false allegations against Mr. Depp, Ms. Heard has become a darling of the #MeToo movement, was the first actress named a Human Rights Champion of the United Nations Human Rights Office, was appointed ambassador on women’s rights at the American Civil Liberties Union, and was hired by L’Oreal Paris as its global spokesperson.”

Amber Heard’s attorney replied: “This frivolous action is just the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard.”

April 2019:

Amber Heard filed a motion to dismiss Depp’s $50M defamation lawsuit. Moreover, she also detailed more instances of domestic abuse. She claims Depp hit her, threw cans and glass bottles at her and ripped out her hair. She alleged that during one incident on a train, Depp choked her against a wall. Heard even said that Depp would become a totally different version of himself, “Johnny the Monster.”

May 2019:

Johnny Depp submitted a statement in support of his defamation lawsuit. He alleged that Amber “painted on bruises” and caused him “serious bodily injury.”

July 2019:

Depp’s legal team planned to send a subpoena to James Franco and even Elon Musk. After she allegedly got a black eye in a fight with Depp, Franco and Amber were together. Later, a photo emerged of Johnny Depp lying on a stretcher. He claims Amber put out a cigarette on his face during an altercation. The lawsuit has continued to date, with trial date in August 2020.
