With the Oscars 2020 now closer than ever, we finally know the 5 names battling to bag the title of best Lead Actor. Leonardo DiCaprio, Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce, and Joaquin Phoenix are the shortlisted nominees in the said category.
While it can be said that the award can go to any of the 5 actors for their exceptional performances in their respective features, we might just know who has the potential to edge out the others… Yes, we do! So, here is our prediction on who will emerge as the best Lead Actor, come Oscars 2020.
Joaquin Phoenix: A Sure Shot Winner!
Phoenix’s slick portrayal of the titular character in Joker has all other performances beat by a considerable margin. He has recently won both a BAFTA as well as a Golden Globe Award for the Best Actor. So, the possibility of winning an Academy Award doesn’t seem too far fetched now either. Moreover, the work he put in to make both his character, as well as the film work, is unquestionable. So, Phoenix is our pick for the Best Actor. Let’s make Heath Ledger Proud!
DiCaprio’s big Hollywood return in the Quentin Tarantino-directed feature received widespread recognition. However, it looks like Hugh Glass in The Revenant will remain his only Oscar-winning performance over the foreseeable future.
Trust us when we say it, Pain and Glory is a must-see film. Moreover, Antonio Banderas’ awe-inspiring portrayal of a past-his-prime film director Salvador Mallo is on-point. If it wasn’t for Phoenix, he would have definitely bagged the gold this time around. However, him not winning the Oscar doesn’t undermine his work in any way!
If you have ever desired to see a picture-perfect portrayal of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (later Pope Francis), Jonathan Pryce has got you covered! Pryce’s performance in The Two Popes will make you want him to star in every Biographical feature from here on. However, it pains us to admit that we believe he has his work cut out for him when it comes to the upcoming Oscars. Although we can’t pinpoint a definite reason for it, a Pryce win doesn’t seem to be on the cards.
Progressing from a best Supporting Actor nominee to a Lead Actor nominee in just a year is an achievement in its own right. Although Driver still has a lot to prove in order to win the big one, his talent is undeniable!
So, do you agree with us that Joaquin Phoenix would emerge as the Best Lead Actor at the Oscars 2020? Or are you backing someone else? Sound off in the comments!
