Oscar 2020 Costume Design Nominations

Five amazing films are competing to take this prestigious award home. And these films all did an excellent job with their costumes and wardrobes.

THE IRISHMAN- Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson

JOJO RABBIT- Mayes C. Rubeo

JOKER-Mark Bridges

LITTLE WOMEN-Jacqueline Durran

ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD- Arianna Phillips

Best Costume Design Prediction

Each movie in the nominees symbolized an era with much beauty using magnificent costumes and designs.

One of these is a period film, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood set in the year 1969. Vintage dresses, leather and turtlenecks, go-go pants and Hawaiian shirts- the movie was glamorous just like the ’60s. Overall, this movie can easily win the award and rightfully so-in our opinion.

Then comes Taika Watiti’s Jojo Rabbit, also a period film. The costumes in this film were imaginative and expressive, fitting each character perfectly. Jojo, a ten-year-old nazi fanatic wears Hitler youth uniforms but, styled adorably. Mayes Rubeo also used vibrant colors and patterns for Jojo’s single mom Scarlett Johannson. And of course, the distinctive shoes she wears that are memorable for a reason.

One more powerful nomination here is Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, yet another period film set in the 19th Century. Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran brings the sisters’ costumes to life, just as one would imagine while reading the classic novel. But with a fresh approach.

She shared her idea behind the costumes:

I think that it was about bringing a kind of new life to Victorian girls — keeping it Victorian but not doing it in the way that we’re used to seeing it.”

We think that Little Women has a strong chance of winning. But Jojo Rabbit has an equal possibility of take this award too. Just guessing!
