Oscars 2020 Predictions for Short Film Animated Category
The 92nd annual academy awards are upon us. As the 2020 Oscars approach us, there are many traditions that follow. One of them being the Winner Predictions. We looked into the possibilities for the category for ‘Short Film (Animated)’. Animated films occupy a large part of our lives. Be it a Disney movie like Toy Story or well, basically the big wide world of everything. Short films are best for people who cannot stand to sit (lol) hours for a movie. This is very much my preferred entertainment. You know, a good way to kill time.
Out of all the short films that could be considered Oscar Worthy, there’s the following five that are nominated for the category.
Oscars 2020 Nominations | Short Film (Animated)
1. Sister – Siqi Song
Siqi Song is an animator who created Sister as part of her project in CalArts. This was her graduation film for her Experimental Animation Program. Here’s the synopsis of the film.
A man remembers his childhood memory of growing up with an annoying little sister in 1990s China. How would his life have been if things had gone differently?
The film is weirdly interesting with the over-sized sister and how she shrinks once her brother pulls the umbellic cord off. Uh… weird. But give it a shot. It’s surely a film to leave your wondering.
The film came out in 2018 and has since gained quite the attention. The film has received plenty of recognition and has so far won 5 Academy Award Qualifying Awards. Sister has also been nominated for many other awards.
2. Mémorable – Bruno Collet
This film is one we could very much get behind. The film is directed by Bruno Collet. The film is all about facing increasing troubles and struggles between a painter and his wife due to an unavoidable disease.
An aging painter and his wife struggle increasingly to cope with his advancing dementia.
The short film is rated a solid 8/10 on IMDb. The story highlights the struggles that come with dementia and how destructive it can get overtime. The film is beautifully written and executed a motion picture. Every second of this film reflects the Jean-François Le Corre infamous confluence of styles.
3. Hair Love – Matthew A. Cherry
This is a more Disney kind of animation. The film is released by Sony Animation Pictures and the writer is Matthew A. Cherry.
Hair Love, an Oscar-nominated animated short film from Matthew A. Cherry, tells the heartfelt story of an African American father learning to do his daughter’s hair for the first time.
No one can ever go wrong with a heartfelt father-daughter bonding story. The battle between the father and the hair is especially hilarious.
Though, the story is rated 7.4/10 by IMDb. In the end, the recipe for good hair-doing is a lot of love. Well, hair or no hair, it’s always beautiful when you love someone.
4. Kitbull – Rosana Sullivan, Kathrine Hendricks
This one is another seemingly Disney concepts inspired film. The movie depicts an unlikely friendship between a kitten and a pit bull. Animators Rosana Sullivan and Kathrine Hendricks produced the movie.
An unlikely connection sparks between two creatures: a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull. Together, they experience friendship for the first time.
This is a Pixar production which is 2D. Who doesn’t love animals? That may just be the reason that IMDb rates it 8.1/10. The movie came out last year in January.
5. Daughter – Daria Kashcheeva
This is a Czech animated film that was released in August 2019. Even though the film is still fairly new, it has received 38 awards. The response to the film is just wow!
The bond between a father and a daughter is imperiled by matters that go unspoken and hurts that are slow to heal.
This one is again about a father and daughter and how important voicing yourself can be in situations that are even related to your closest kins. Although IMDb rates it just a low 6.5/10, the short animated film is surely worth a watch.
