“Harley Quinn’s(Margot Robbie) Birds of Prey movie does not require Jared Leto’s Joker”. Director of the latest DCU movie is not repeating the mistake that cost Suicide Squad director (David Ayer) his sleep. It is all about Quinn this time and the 1-hour 49-minute flick is set for a 7 February 2020 release date.

Birds of Prey is going to be Harley Quinn centric?

Suicide Squad did not meet the expectations of many fans because they wanted to see more of Margot Robbie’s character. David Ayer’s 2016 movie had less of Harley Quinn and more of everything else.

The 2020 DC Comics film Bird of Prey, however, is a realization of that omission and director Cathy Yan is making sure that it does not happen again. During a press conference, Dead Pigs (2018) director explains why Jared Leto’s Joker is not part of the story-line.

Well for us, I think Birds of Prey starts with the breakup and then it’s all about Harley Quinn. We just wanted to work with that and whatever we needed him to be… just to show that he existed and that there was a breakup, but the focus of the movie is definitely not on The Joker.

You must be thinking that omitting Joker from Birds of Prey is a mistake but I think it is a wise decision. Remember what happened when the Suicide Squad was released? Everyone started bashing David Ayer for not giving Harley Quinn the deserved screen time. The director himself admitted to it later on.

The spine of Suicide Squad was Harley’s journey. In many ways it was her movie, her escaping her relationship with Joker was the major emotional through line. A director holds an invisible compass in their hands. It guides every shot, every performance. That compass points to the destination.

The decision to make Birds of Prey all about Harley Quinn while still acknowledging her break-up with Joker is a smart one. Let’s see if Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey does justice to Margot Robbie’s character. Dankanator will keep you updated.
