90’s kids know how awesome Akon’s music was at the time when we were growing up. I remember listening to ‘Smack that all on the floor’ and ‘I wanna make up right na na na” all day long grooving to his amazing beats. Today he is more than just a musician; a successful businessman aswell. We have a piece of news about Akon that might take you by surprise. Well, the musician is ready to build the ‘Akon City’ and no it’s not a game, it’s really an actual city in Senegal with a good cause. Keep reading to find out more.
Akon builds his own city in Senegal
It is confirmed. The deal has been finalized that the musician is building his very own city called ‘Akon City’ in Senegal. In case you did not know, Senegal, officially known as ‘Republic Of Senegal’ is a country in West Africa. Akon himself is of Senegalese descent and has his roots there. So it makes sense that he wanted to create his own city there.
According to an article originally posted on CNN in 2018, he had said that he would build his city on 2000 acres of land gifted to him by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall.
The singer recently posted a picture of himself with Senegalese officials to announce that he had signed the agreement for Akon City. He also said he looks forward to hosting his guests there in the future.

The futuristic crypto city
This won’t just be any another city in Senegal. The city will be innovative, futuristic and will run on cryptocurrency named as ‘Akoin’.
The area would be a five minutes drive from Senegal’s new Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport, outside of Dakar.
Speaking about the digital currency, Akon said,
“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down.”
This city is also said to supposedly be Senegal’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) city. It will also be the first city to ever run on 100% renewable energy.
This will empower young entrepreneurs in Africa and is a big step by Akon to help his country develop and grow.
There’s a lot more about Akon City that we don’t know such as who will govern it. We have all those questions running in our minds too. More information is expected to be released in February.
