Marriage Story Review: What Divorce Actually Looks Like

0 623

One of the reasons why I love ‘The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind’ is because it was real and honest. It really got the essence of how breakups really feel like. The movie shows you just how flawed human beings are and just how difficult it is to maintain a relationship. Marriage Story is just like the Jim Carrey movie in that aspect.

Marriage Story – A True Depiction of Divorce

There are a ton of movies made on divorce but I don’t remember any that have tugged at my heart as this one. Marriage story is about divorce and it stays true to it. There’s no dramatic turn to it and perhaps that is because the director himself is a divorcee. However, I won’t go as far as to call Marriage Story an autobiography movie. However, I will take the liberty to say that this movie is Noah Baumbach’s best work.

From the way to Scarlett’s character Nicole saying that the divorce was happening not just because they were simply not in love anymore to both character’s lawyers fighting in front of the court, the movie feels too real and raw. And that is exactly why Marriage Story is a must-watch.

Scarlett Johansson and  Adam Driver Career Best Performance

I’m not really a big fan of Scarlett’s acting but after this movie, I have to say, she better get nominated for an Oscar. Marriage Story is hands down her best performance to date. Her Nicole is vulnerable, emotional yet strong and fierce. You can feel everything that Nicole is going through. Her saying that she can’t force emotions when it comes to acting, but then crying on the spot when thinking about the divorce, it all feels too real and for that, I applaud Scarlett Johansson.

Adam Driver, on the other hand, SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN HIS OSCAR ALREADY! There are times when it doesn’t seem like the actor is acting at all. It just feels like you’re watching reality play on the screen. That is exactly what it felt like when I was watching Adam Driver play Charlie in Marriage Story. The two scenes that actually made me cry included Charlie. Driver was perfect in his portrayal of a husband on the verge of a divorce, and a father desperate to get his son’s custody.

The Verdict on Marriage Story

This movie is without a doubt getting a number of Oscar nominations and if it doesn’t, the Academy Awards are rigged. That being said, this is a must-watch and I give it 4.5 out 5.

Marriage Story is streaming on Netflix.
