Studio Ghibli Movies Available For Purchase

The Verge reports that almost all Studio Ghibli movies are can be bought from online platforms. These include Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Google Play Store, Microsoft, Vudu, FandangoNow, etc. Available in the United States and Canada, the titles are available in the original Japanese voice, and also in English dubbing. Until this, the movies were only available on physical platforms, like DVDs, etc. The list of movies is long, but here are some of the famous ones:

  • Castle in the Sky
  • From Up on Poppy Hill
  • Kiki’s Delivery Service
  • My Neighbours the Yamadas
  • Ocean Waves
  • Ponyo
  • Princess Mononoke
  • Spirited Away
  • The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
  • When Marnie Was There
  • Whisper of the Heart

These and the rest of the other Studio Ghibli movies are available for only $20. Luckily, there is also a six-bundle pack coming which will only cost $100. This collection bundle contains some of the most famous titles:

  1. Kiki’s Delivery Service
  2. Princess Mononoke
  3. Howl’s Moving Castle
  4. Spirited Away
  5. Ponyo
  6. And, My Neighbour Totoro

Famous Title Missing From The List

One movie is noticeably absent from the above list: Grave of the Fireflies. Directed by Isao Takahata in 1988, Studio Ghibli co-founder, the movie tells a distressing story about two siblings living out a life of survival during World War Two.

After investigation, it is discovered that Studio Ghibli does not own the rights of distribution to this movie. Rather, they are owned by publisher Shinchosha. Perhaps this why that Grave of Fireflies is not going to HBO Max when the new streaming service will launch.

AT&T, however, has secured exclusive streaming rights to the films earlier this year. This means that Studio Ghibli movies will be available on a digital streaming platform for the first time.
