Emilia Clarke Speaks About Her Journey Battling a Serious Medical Problem
Among other influential figures at the star-studded Dreamfroce 2019, Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke was also there and she spoke her heart out. The topic of choice? Acquired Brain Injuries. Millions like Emilia Clarke suffer from the consequences of trauma or stroke. Just like PTSD, this mental condition requires life-long care (most importantly from people around). This invisible disease makes the person invisible as well.
Dreamforce 2019 saw her talk about subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), life-threatening neurological disorders, that almost killed Emilia Clarke. SAH is the result of a stroke that causes bleeding inside the brain.
The actress recalled:
I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture. As I later learned, about a third of SAH patients die immediately or soon thereafter.
Moreover, the actress also previously mentioned in the New Yorker article how she forgot her own name and couldn’t even speak after surgery. Emilia Clarke panicked and wanted to die because as an actress the most important ability was to memorize and communicate:
I was suffering from a condition called aphasia, a consequence of the trauma my brain had suffered. Even as I was muttering nonsense, my mum did me the great kindness of ignoring it and trying to convince me that I was perfectly lucid. But I knew I was faltering. In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die. My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, on communication. Without that, I was lost.
Emilia Came Out the Other Side, Stronger and More Inspirational than Ever
Though, she ultimately got back control and was able to finish the filming for Game of Thrones until its finale. The struggle was definitely hard though. The actress thought she was going to die at any moment but she endured and we’re glad she did.
Emilia Clarke told her story at Dreamforce 2019 and while describing the frightening feeling of abandonment after leaving professional care, she said:
It feels like walking off a cliff.
While sharing her story at Dreamforce 2019 Emilia points out that:
Even in the best healthcare services, neuro-recovery is not a priority.
That is why she started the organization to prove help for that recovering from brain injury. The organization is called SameYou.
She also got to meet Obama and got quite emotional. We’re sure she was able to inspire many at Dreamforce 2019 event because of her bravery.
