Lee Child wants Tom Cruise to quit action movies. The author of Jack Reacher novels advised the star of Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission Impossible series to focus more on character-driven roles.
Tom Cruise is too old now, says Lee Child
The 57-year old star of Jack Reacher movies is known to perform his own stunts in Hollywood. The Misson Impossible saga saw him perform some crazy stunts.
In Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise scaled the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa). Rogue Nation saw him hanging on the side of a plane. In 2006, J.J Abrams made him jump off a skyscraper and in the latest, Fallout, Ethan Hunt broke his ankle while jumping from one building to another.
The car chase in Jack Reacher and a motor-bike chase scene in Knight and Day (starring Cameron Diaz) are also part of his impressive profile.
However, Lee Child wants the three-time Golden Globe Award winner to quit chasing cars and jumping off buildings and focus more on other roles. Lee thinks Tom Cruise is too old for action movies now.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the author discussed his decision to quit writing Jack Reacher and Tom’s reaction to that:
Tom Cruise was reluctant. He had his own investment in it, he was going to argue against it. It sounds extremely patronizing but I think it’s good for him. He’s too old for this stuff. He’s 57, he needs to move on, transition to being a character actor.
Tom Cruise could get another 20 years out of it. He has talent. He’s a terrific guy, very considerate, good fun.
I don’t think Tom is giving up on action any time soon. His upcoming Top Gun: Maverick and Edge of Tomorrow 2 are proof of that.
