This is very unlike Netflix to have an episode removed like that. However, as we proceed further into details we might understand why they did it. The top-rated streaming service deleted an episode of Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj. The episode was around Jamal Khashoggi, and some particular people in the Middle East did not fancy watching it.
Netflix CEO Explains Deleted Patriot Act Episode
Netflix was forced to take down an episode of Patriot Act by Hasan Minhaj because it was on Jamal Khashoggi. The Episode criticized Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman over Khashoggi’s murder.
CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, defended the action by explaining that they had to comply with Saudi Arabian officials who asked Netflix to take it down. Hastings further added that Netflix is not a news channel, but entertainment. He said that the streaming service can benefit a lot more from being an entertainment center rather than just another news channel.
Story on Jamal Khashoggi
In the Patriot Act episode, titled “Saudi Arabia”, Hasan Minhaj criticizes Saudi Prince Mohammad bin Salman. The Crown Prince is allegedly responsible for the murder of journalist Khashoggi. He also calls out the U.S to reassess its relationship with the country.
Minhaj talked about how Muslims should also readjust their views about the country, which is not as holy as it once was. He says:
“MBS asked, ‘Why the outrage?’ and frankly, MBS’s confusion is completely understandable… He has been getting away with autocratic shit like [Khashoggi’s killing] for years with almost no blowback from the international community.”
Khashoggi was a columnist for The Washington Post who often criticized the new regime of Saudi Arabia. Last year he disappeared after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Someone brutally murdered him in the building while his fiancee waited outside for him. Security footages reveal his body was cut in several pieces using a bone saw.
CIA determines that the Saudi prince ordered the murder but, as usual, the Saudi government denies it. Hastings, from Netflix, clarified his stance that even though they deleted the Patriot Act episode on Khashoggi, they would not comply if they later ask to remove gay content.
So, is this some sort of a consolation prize for us?
