While the DC Universe’s latest movie, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, enjoys immense success, the star of Suicide Squad, Jared Leto, seems quite upset.
Jared Leto & The Rival Joker
It’s quite clear by now that the 30 Seconds To Mars star was not pleased with the idea of Todd Phillip’s version of the Joker movie going in production. How furious was he? Well, according to some sources close to The Hollywood Reporter, Jared Leto tried his best to stop Phoenix’s casting.
It is said that Leto reached out to his agents at CAA and shared his frustration over the entire situation. He also made his music manager, Irving Azoff, to talk to Warner’s parent company. Basically, Jared Leto tried everything in his power to try and kill the Todd Phillip movie.
The sources say that both Leto and his music manager have denied reaching out to Warner Bros. What’s alarming is that Jared Leto and Azoff have since parted ways.
Was Leto Promised His Own Solo Joker Movie?
Leto seems shocked by the whole scenario, looks like he was sure about playing the villain to Bruce Wayne’s Batman at some point. Some sources even said that Jared Leto thought that Warner lead him on with promises of a solo movie. Instead, they green-lit Joaquin Phoenix starer The Joker.
It’s ironic how well The Joker did even-though the higher-ups at Warner were hesitant about the director’s dark take on the story. The movie has grossed over $700 million to date. It is said the studio wasn’t really impressed with Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. According to a source involved in the situation:
In his defense, it was never really his movie, but his attempt to ‘invent’ a place for himself in it backfired.
At this point, it’s unclear if he will play Joker ever again. According to sources, it’s over for him, as far as this project is concerned. Jared Leto will also miss the roles in the upcoming DC movies. Birds of Prey, Centered on Margot Robbie’s, Harley Quinn, and the next Suicide Squad movie. Sources close to the situation say:
How do you play the Joker you established following [Phoenix]? It kind of ends his Joker run.
