Pose’s Indya Moore Speaks Up Against Intersex Genital Mutilation
Netflix’s Pose star, Indya Moore, just keeps getting the limelight for all the right reasons. This time, they rose up to voice their concerns regarding an issue affecting the LGBTQ community. On the account of Intersex Awareness Day, Moore raised their voice for intersex and transgender people. They rose up against genital mutilation.
What is Intersex Genital Mutilation?
First thing’s first, guys. If we want to understand Indya Moore stands up for, we have to start from basics. Let’s start with this: what does intersex mean in LGBTQ? According to Oll Intersex Network, intersex people are individuals who have hormonal or physical features that resemble both, male and female all at once. Their congenital genetic makes them a female with male features or male with female features. Sometimes they do not have clearly defined features.
So, what is Intersex Genital Mutilation (IGM)? Well, similar to female genital mutilation (FGM), IGM is a surgical procedure on the genitals of newborn babies. For cultural or religious reasons, babies are operated upon whose genitals do not look “normal” enough to be identified as male or female. According to the female genital mutilation law in the United States, up to 35 states have this banned. The FGM statistics reveal that more than 200 million females have gone through this surgery and annually 3 million faces the risk.
Indya Moore On IGM
On Oct 26, which is considered as Intersex Awareness Day, Netflix’s Pose star Indya Moore posted the following on their social media:
Stop mutilating children!!!! Reposted from @rebeccasugar (@get_regrann) – October 26th is #IntersexAwarenessDay! Please check out @interact_adv to learn about national and state level efforts, and to read #MyIntersexBody stories about the real experiences of intersex people ⭐️ Thank you to the intersex youth advocates of interACT for this collaboration!
Indya Moore has at several times stood up for trans and the transgender community. Being a part of the community themselves, they have done several philanthropic activities to raise awareness for the LGBTQIA community. To help their followers learn more about the issue, they shared the link of an organization known as ‘interACT’ that sheds light on the issue.
InterACT describes itself as:
Advocacy org raising #intersex visibility, centering youth. We see a world in which intersex bodies are embraced, not erased. 💛
The thing about Indya Moore and the movement’s stance, in general, is that that child has no input in the decision. Usually, parents ask the first question “Is it a boy or a girl?”, and that’s difficult to answer. Most parents believing that different genitals would make their child queer, or gay. The homophobic mentality makes them decide for the child’s future and life. Considering, they undergo painful and unwanted surgeries without their consent, is not right.
