8chan | Is This The End Of The Notorious Website?

0 1,762

8chan is termed as an extremists’ platform which was enabling them for violent ramblings. The notorious site is considered to play a part in El Paso & other mass shootings. It is also linked to Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand as well as an attack on US synagogue.  8chan site is currently offline and the community is looking for a new home. Is this the end of 8chan or will it be returning soon? Will 8chan get its fandom back if it is cleared by the legal team?

8chan | How It All Started?

I keep calling it 8chan even after knowing it is infinity-chan or infinite-chan. Well, the site was formed to serve as an imageboard. This imageboard is composed of multiple message boards, every board has an owner who serves as moderator. However, the website administration does not get involved much in these boards. Probably that is why things got out of hands and “freedom” of speech created chaos.

The 8chan programmer, Frederick Brennan, created 8chan as an alternate to 4chan. His prior focus was to provide freedom of speech on the internet. The website’s FAQs also enforced one rule only.

Do not post, request, or link to any content illegal in the United States of America. Do not create boards with the sole purpose of posting or spreading such content.

8chan message boards offered platforms for racism, hate crimes as well as mass shootings. As a matter of fact, people have also confirmed that this site also provided some content on child pornography.  8chan traffic increased after 4chan started banning some topics, specifically GamerGate. However, after the mass shootings at El Paso, Texas, and Ohio, 8chan was taken off as Cloudflare stopped their services of the content delivery network to the website.

Change Of Domain & Ultimate Removal From The Internet

8chan was founded in 2013, and they changed the domain for the first time in 2015 from ‘8chan.co’ to ‘8ch.net’. The domain was changed as a preventive measure after users started complaining about child pornography message boards & content to 8chan’s registrar.  They regained the domain later but kept the new one, with original domain redirecting to it.

The programmer Brennan resigned in 2016 after the failure of a project titled Infinity Next. He also realized that this platform for freedom-of-speech was turning into something else. Jim Watkins, the original owner of 8chan, took over the site then. After the recent mass shootings, Cloudflare initially defended 8chan. However, changed their stance the next day and confirmed 8chan termination in their blog.

8chan is among the more than 19 million Internet properties that use Cloudflare’s service. We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.

The End Of 8chan? What Happens Next?

Though Cloudflare is not supporting the 8chan website anymore. However, that does not solve the issue and cure the root cause of the disease. The same fact was also brought in light by Cloudflare in their termination blog, which raises a red flag against the other service providers.

Unfortunately, we have seen this situation before and so we have a good sense of what will play out. Almost exactly two years ago we made the determination to kick another disgusting site off Cloudflare’s network: the Daily Stormer. That caused a brief interruption in the site’s operations but they quickly came back online using a Cloudflare competitor. That competitor at the time promoted as a feature the fact that they didn’t respond to legal process. Today, the Daily Stormer is still available and still disgusting. They have bragged that they have more readers than ever. They are no longer Cloudflare’s problem, but they remain the Internet’s problem.

Brennan, the programmer, was 19 years old when he developed 8chan. Now he regrets making it. He also suffers from brittle bone disease due to which he had limited activities so he focused on computer programming. Brennan wants 8chan permanently off from the internet. And we hope it is really the end of 8chan.
