The Outline Site Bought By Bustle
It was recently announced that the Bustle Digital Group has bought Joshua Topolsky’s website The Outline. Recode reported this new. There were already talks happening between Bustle to acquire The Outline
This is what the founder and CEO of Bustle Digital had to say about the acquisition:
The Outline has created industry leading technology and ad product. We love what they’ve done as an independent, story-driven publication, and look forward to working together to speak to new audiences BDG has not previously reached.
It seems like the The Outline’s founder is content with this new change as well.
We can’t wait to bring our team, technology, and storytelling to the BDG family. Bryan and the company have built an impressive modern media business, and we’re excited to be part of the next chapter.
Since the two companies CEOs are both on board for this merger, we can only hope for a brighter future ahead for The Outline.
The Outline’s History
Joshua Topolsky was actually one of the founding editors of the well known website called The Verge. He also worked at the Bloomberg. But ultimately he came up with the idea of The Outline. It happened in 2016.
It is a unique website that does not have the primary goal of getting views but rather for creating quality content that is catered to a very niche group of readers. You can deduce that from their very unique tagline:
It’s not for everyone, it’s for you
Though, unfortunately the competitive digital world of today isn’t that kind to websites who are targeting a unique and niche group. They did not end up generating the revenue they needed to stay afloat. The Outline even had to lay off its entire writing staff last year. That resulted in a boycott campaign from all the freelance writers online.
Well, eventually The Outline found itself being acquired by Bustle Digital.
