Netflix is shifting its focus on turning video games and book series into TV series. Cuphead animated TV series is coming out soon on Netflix. But everyone is anxiously waiting for The Witcher. It is an upcoming fantasy drama TV series based on the Polish book series-The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski. Netflix announced the project in 2017. Initially, they were planning a movie on the books. However, Vice President International Originals at Netflix, Kelly Luegenbiehl, dissuaded the producers. The series has 8 books and such a huge story could not be turned into a standalone movie. Due to the material available in the books, viewers can expect a longer running TV series. Some are even speculating that The Witcher could be Netflix’s own version of Game of Thrones. (Henry Cavill does look like a Targaryen).

Netflix’s The Witcher | Plot & Episodes

The Witcher season 1 will consist of 8 episodes. Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist, is a solitary monster hunter. He strives to live in a world where people are sharper than the beasts.  Destiny joins him with a sorceress and a princess with a secret. The trio then moves together and hunts beasts in order to try distinguishing between good and evil living in The Continent. Show-runners have the book series and the game series worth of stories to pick from. If you want to know what the TV series would be all about, you can read the books or play the games.

Cast, Crew & Release Date

Henry Cavill is playing the role of Geralt of Rivia. Other cast members include Freya Allan, Jodhi May, Anya Chalotra, Adam Levy, and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson. Anya Chalotra will be playing the role of sorceress whereas; Freya Allan will be the young princess with a dangerous secret. Andrzej Sapkowski is creative consultant to the executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. Both of these have produced Amazon’s The Expanse as well.

The series is expected to be released by Fall 2019. However, a release date has not been confirmed yet. Official trailer has also not been released but you can watch a brief overview of the storyline here. (Spoiler Alert)
