The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian is stuck in another public controversy. After launching her own shapewear line, Kim’s under fire for cultural and racial in-appropriation. Following the massive negative response, Kim has decided to change the name from Kimono to something else. Although they have not picked the name, we are hoping Kim would be more careful this time. After all, there have been too many controversies under the Kardashian and West name.
New Shape wear Line ‘Kimono’ Slammed For Cultural Appropriation
A few days earlier, the Keeping up with the Kardashians star announced her new shapewear line for which she was very excited. Not only had she been developing it for a long time, but it was introduced in 9 different shades and a variety of sizes. Despite Kim’s attempt of making it inclusive, the name Kimono developed a controversy.
Apart from social media hate which the Kardashians should be used to by this time, the mayor of Kyoto himself wrote to Kim Kardashian. He expressed his feelings about the name of her brand accusing her of cultural appropriation. In his letter, he wrote that,
Kimono is a traditional ethnic dress fostered in our rich nature and history with our predecessors’ tireless endeavors and studies. And it is a culture that has been cherished and passed down with care in our living. Also, it is a fruit of craftsmanship and truly symbolizes sense of beauty, spirits and values of Japanese. We think that the names for ‘Kimono’ are the asset shared with all humanity who love Kimono and its culture therefore they should not be monopolized.
Since majority public had a negative opinion, Kim took notice of these concerns. In her latest post, she claimed that she had the best intentions when announcing her shapewear line. Her products always aim to be inclusive and diverse.
Let’s wait to see what Kim chooses this time as a brand name!
