Doctor Strange, though despite the less screen time, served an important role in taking down Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Thus, fans are eagerly waiting for any more updates on Benedict Cumberbatch’s movie. Now after the confirmation of the Doctor Strange Sequel, here is everything we know so far.
Plot Line for Doctor Strange Sequel
Doctor Strange has become a fan favorite ever since his first movie came out in 2016. Though, we did not see much of him in Endgame, he had a major impact. In Avengers: Infinity War, he used the Time Stone to look into 14 million timelines and see the one where they could defeat Thanos. After discovering it, he gave his own Infinity Stone to Thanos who used it to annihilate half of the universe. Yet, at the end. the Avengers do end up bringing back everyone who was dead and to kill Thanos. Though, this meant that the Time Stone was destroyed in Avengers Endgame.
This means he will have much less power in his own upcoming marvel movie. Moreover, the centre of Eye of Agamotto was destroyed as well so we won’t be seeing much of time travel in the Doctor Strange Sequel. Although Tilda Swinton’s character The Ancient One died, we might see her again in some sort of prophecy passing.
Another Villain for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange?
Doctor Strange would need a new and interesting villain to serve as a worthy threat. The first movie teased that a much more evil version of Mordo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, could be coming up. Scott Derrickson, the writer and director, wants a really strong villain for Dr. Strange.
One particular villain he had in mind was that of a character known as Nightmare.
I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept [of] the Nightmare Realm. That’s early – that’s like the first Strange tale. I think that’s in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that.
Rumors and Theories
With a fan base this global, the sequel for Doctor Strange was bound to have some theories emerge. The first movie’s screenwriter Job Spaihts thought of adding the character Clea in the sequel movie if it were to happen.
She’s a really compelling character as a foil, a love interest, a colleague of Doctor Strange’s, and she always carries with her that width of mystery as to whether she is human, and how human, and what that means for his relationship to her. So we might find a way to introduce her to the story.
Another theory by Screen Rant states that the sequel may use time travel once again. This is because Dr. Strange no longer has the Time Stone to defeat Dormammu if he decides to attack Earth again. The theory says that Stephen Strange might go to the Quantum Realm to go back in time and recruit a younger version of The Ancient One.
This would be a tricky decision to make as the use of time travel in Avengers: Endgame already had fans asking a lot of questions. There were a lot of loopholes that were conveniently ignored to move the story forward. Let’s see if this upcoming marvel movie adds in time travel or not.
Cast and Crew
Scott Derrickson, the co-writer and director of the first Doctor Strange, is going to return for its sequel as well. The main cast return as well. That includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong) and Rachel McAdams (Dr. Christine Palmer). They plan to start production in early 2020. Wong and Cumberbatch have been officially confirmed and McAdams hasn’t.
