Iron Man (2008)
The very first installment in the mega MCU universe is 2008’s Iron Man. Jon Favreau presented Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark before the world. As the plot kicks-off, moviegoers are introduced to Stark, an uncaring, playboy wanting to make more money in less time. His world; however, turns upside down when a terrorist organization kidnaps him, demanding his technology in ransom. They’re accompanied by a fellow detainee Ho Yinsin (Shaun Toub), Stark puts his ingenuity to use to craft an uncaging armor- something that becomes a horrid nightmare for the rest of his life.
Tony’s weapon manufacturing plant ends up taking a lot of innocent lives, an idea that Tony is unable to stand. Henceforth, for the sake of global peace, Tony does not only shuts down his manufacturing units but also starts positive refinement of his suit.
Later with the help of his trustworthy friend and assistant Air Force Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Terrence Howard), and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) respectively, Stark is able to track his kidnapper down, who turns out to be none other than his business partner, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges).
The betrayal and its consequent realization make Tony profess his super-heroism before the world. And this pivoting turning point leads to greater battles. As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), describes as a ‘first step into a much larger world’ opens the door to a decade of intergalactic clashes, universal politics, overwhelming superpowers and ever-flourishing box office revenues. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Long before The Incredible Hulk came out in 2008, fans had known about the giant, green monster being a product of a scientific experiment gone wrong. The film likewise, detailed the story of Dr Bruce Banner (Edward Norton), a scientist living in South America. Due to exposure of extreme gamma radiation, Banner’s pulse raises to an extreme level; thus forcing the perfectly normal human to undergo a menacing transformation. The movie then introduces Gen. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt), the father of Bruce’s former girlfriend, Betty (Liv Tyler). For Thunderbolt, getting The Hulk captured is a major life goal. In fact, he is so obsessed with the idea that he creates his own monster to ease the execution of his vocations.
As Bruce gradually comes to the realization that a cure for his syndrome exists, he quickly recruits his colleague, Dr Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) to render him some assistance. Here, the super-villain Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) makes his presence felt as he hampers Bruce’s plan to become human again. Blonsky even convinces Sterns into transforming him into an ever more frightening creature, The Abomination. The new-found challenges; however prove healthy for the Hulk, who realizes that while he still can’t control the monster that he is, he can “aim it”. And so the Hulk aims itself at The Abomination, rescuing Harlem from its impending doom. Iron Man 2 (2010)
Following the lucrative initial portion, MCU released its first ever sequel in 2010. Picking up shortly after the events of the first film, the Jon Favreau film introduced Tony Stark as the most famous man on Earth. The premise had expanded to a more universal scale by then, and the second Iron Man had far more diplomatic undertones than its first installment. Stark wants to privatize global peace, and at the same time mend his strained relationship with Pepper Potts. There an under-cover spy Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) joins Stark as his assistant. And a new villain Ivan Vanko a.k.a. Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) enters the scene, recreating Stark’s reactor arc technology.
The taxing and stressful sequence of events drive Tony into doing some questionable stuff. For instance, he convinces James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to steal an Iron Man suit and become War Machine. Towards the climax; however, Stark bounces back from the idea. And soon afterwards, Stark discovers a new element Vibranium to counter his Palladium poisoning. Eventually, Tony fixes the personal mayhem in his life, which enables a more determined approach against the narrative’s baddies. In the end, Tony is able to overcome Whiplash, and his business rival Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell).
