When X-Files first came to Fox, some 26 years ago, little did it have an idea that shows of the future will use it as a TV template. Redefining the importance of Sci-Fi on TV, the cultural touchstone engineered a robust and vast landscape for the genre. Even when it revisited TV after a 14 year long hiatus through its 2016 revival, the show felt just as relevant as its earlier seasons. For years and years, the TV mammoth held the crown for the best Sci-Fi series to have ever aired. But now, after a mighty reign, the Chris Carter classic has been displaced. And that too, by a show way more incognito. Amazon Prime Video ‘s latest Sci-Fi series, The Expanse, has apparently dethroned X-Files and has assumed the title of the best Sci-Fi series to have ever happened. The Expanse Season 4

The Expanse Takes The Throne From The Emmy Winning Sci-Fi Drama X-Files

Through its Twitter handle, Amazon Prime Video recently announced a championship to decide upon a single fan-favorite Sci-Fi TV show. The championship. which had its results governed by a system of online voting, involved a total of 4 rounds and 16 participants. In each round, two entries were pitched against each other and were voted upon. Each winner would subsequently then compete against other winners. And this continued until only 2 contestants were left. The participants included the two parts of the Star Trek Series, The Expanse. Battlestar Galactica, Farspace, Babylon 5, and X-Files were the other choices.

X-Files and The Expanse both belonged to different blocks. Hence, it was only in the final round that we saw the magnum opera competing against each other. Finally, in a dramatic turn of events, The Expanse emerged as a winner defeating X-Files by a margin of nearly 40% of the total votes.

A Residential Shift

The Expanse originally aired on SyFy. In May 2018; however, Syfy refused to renew the Expanse owing to restrictive distribution arrangements, and eventually announced its cancellation. Fans protested the cancellation, gathering over 100,000 signatures for an online petition. They lobbied Amazon Studios and Netflix to pick the series up; a crowdfunding campaign paid for an aeroplane to fly a “#SaveTheExpanse” banner around Amazon Studios. In fact, several celebrities including Wil Wheaton, George R. R. Martin, Patton Oswalt and Andreas Mogensen also endorsed the campaign.

The Expanse Season 4 Coming To Amazon Prime Video This Year

Subsequently, On May 26, at the International Space Development Conference, Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon Prime Video had picked the series up for a Season 4. Production for The Expanse Season 4 begun in October, and it is expected to air sometime later this year.

The Expanse’s convincing design, its bold and unique cinematography, its faithful characterization and its ability to tell politically thrilling narratives in a contemporary style have all introduced a new life and a relatable sense to a much-overlooked TV genre. The Expanse Season 4 will hopefully be a real mascot and a determining game changer of Amazon’s video brand. Additionally, given the love of the fans continues, the series may also take home some Academy prestige.

Both are great. I still watch X-Files to this day. I can’t wait for the next season of the Expanse, though. They could really take the show very far.
BTW I believe the creator of xfiles was Chris Carter not Charles

As someone who helped push the stargate vote (look at how close it was) and seen expanses lead jump by 1-2k in a minute, and then stargate closed in again over the next 15, with almost no increase to expanse, and then when it hit 50,50 again, all of a sudden a 2k vote spike and expanse was in the lead again, all i can say that this is paid pr poll and means literally nothing…

I don’t know why they need to be put up against other shows. Expanse is fantastic and in thrilled it’s back. To compare it with other sci fi series is silly as they all have their own qualities. Also many are older so not on par CGI and set wise.
