With the Academy’s ceremony marking the end of the awards season on Monday, we might finally find the first ever foreign language Oscars Best Picture in Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. Normally films and the creative gears behind them campaign during the Oscars season to allow more publicity for the work. However, the case with Roma is a little different. It has apparently itself become a mechanism and mascot for social campaigning. The National Domestic Workers Alliance have now adopted Roma’s lead character, Cleo, as the face of their crusade. And today, Alfonso Cuaron, director of the ambitious, has himself expressed his gratitude at the success of the film.
National Domestic Workers Alliance Pins Roma As The Face Of Its Movement
The National Domestic Workers Alliance organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. The Alliance realizes that domestic workers are unsung heroes of our childhood and families. They are nannies. house cleaners. and care workers.
The Alliance discusses that normally women of color, and immigrants are employed as domestic workers. The group also elaborates on how despite of performing necessary functions, the roles of domestic workers often goes unnoticed.
There are irregularities in the industry, and employees are working on terribly low wages. Currently, there are 2.5 million domestic workers in the USA. And 70% of them are working at wages as low as $13/ hour. In fact, 65% of these domestic workers do not even have health insurance. The National Domestic Workers Alliance is thus using Roma as a means of encouraging people to take action in their support.91st Academy Awards, Oscars 2019. Oscars 2019 Best Picture
