Selena Gomez Featured in New Song About Anxiety
It’s been a long time since we last heard Selena’s voice in a music track. Released just yesterday, “Anxiety” by Julia Michaels is a song about mental health, featuring Selena Gomez. The lyrics give us an insight into the artists’ lives, and their emotions. Right after the new song was released, Selena made an Instagram post, describing how she felt about it:

My sweet soul sister. Julia you have been a huge part of my life. You have taught me how to have courage when I have self doubt. This song is extremely close to my heart as I’ve experienced anxiety and know a lot of my friends do too. You’re never alone if you feel this way. The message is much needed and I really hope you guys like it!
Selena’s Struggles with Depression
It’s no secret that Selena Gomez went through a pretty rough year. Her struggles with the disease Lupus and a kidney transplant were obviously very difficult and painful for a start. She also went through a breakup and other problems. She opened up about her mental health issues via an Instagram story a few months ago, before which she had been on a complete break from social media.
There’s no doubt that all celebrities need a social media break every now and then. Hence, it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Selena took one too. However, it was when Gomez was admitted into a rehabilitation center for depression and anxiety issues that friends and fans got pretty concerned. According to reports, her depression was a side effect of her struggles with Lupus and the recent surgery.
Moreover, due to the transplant, Selena was forbidden from drinking or smoking. Doctors advised her to stay cautious about her health. Alcohol, specifically, could be seriously detrimental for her health. Reportedly, this was part of the reason that triggered Gomez to break down. Soon after, family members realized that she wasn’t okay and took her to rehab.
When she finally returned, she made a few posts about how the last few months have been a journey of immense self-growth and learning for her. It seems that she is doing a lot better than before.

It’s been awhile since you have heard from me, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and to thank you for your love and support. Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges and growth. It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming. Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead. Love you all.
Anxiety by Julia Michaels, Selena Gomez
The new track called “Anxiety” talks about mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them. It’s not an easy subject to open up about. The lyrics of the song imply that it’s hard to get friends to understand what you’re going through when they haven’t been through the same:
“But all my friends, they don’t know what it’s like, what it’s like.
They don’t understand why I can’t sleep through the night.”
‘Anxiety’ is the intro to Michaels’ second studio EP, Inner Monologue. Julia Michaels has always been vocal about her mental health problems. Previously, she shared a demo of the song with Rolling Stone, who described it as a “campfire strum supported by a heartbeat bass line”.
Grammy winner producer and longtime collaborator, Ian Kirkpatrick helped Julia Michaels to produce the song. The singer uses it as a medium to express her personal experience with anxiety, her sleepless nights, hearing from exes and refusing her doctor’s advice to take medicine. Selena Gomez chimes in and admits that she could be hard to deal with sometimes:
“And my exes all say that I’m hard to deal with…
And I admit it, it’s true.”
It’s not very easy to open up about personal mental health issues, especially to the public. It’s admirable to see these two young artists take the time to create a song that’s not only true to themselves but relatable for other people out there who struggle with similar problems.
